The metal rod that goes through the long hinge on my engine hatch sunpad keeps coming out one side of it. I'll keep hammering it back in there and the next time we take the boat out after raising the hatch a few times it's back sticking out an inch or so as see in the pic. What am I doing wrong? How can I fix this?

I have several hinges that I tap the rod back in every now and then on. Not sure how to fix it if you can't secure one end or the other.

easy fix
slide it back in and tap one and of the hinge wit hammer squeezing rod inside hinge and preventing from sliding out
remember only one side or will possibly break rod when you try open seat
you will notice small "dots" on your hinge - that are original factory "pressure" points but they became loose after while.

make sure the rod is shorter than the hinge to do this step!

Someone on another forum suggested I trim the rod so its short enough for me to put a screw in at each end. Would doing this work?

Probably but it wil be a PIA drilling rounded stainless steel. On my boat when this happens I either just bend the rod slightly at the end then tap it back in with a hammer, or (if accessable) I push the rod back in and with a punch and hammer bend the last section of hinge slightly. This is usually a 2 to 3 year fix.
