engine fresh water flush out systems question

Hello,
Just bought a 2002 sea ray 260 sundancer. 6.2 merc. Bravo3

It has a hose spiggot near the transom door that is a fresh water flushout system. Boat is in the water all season so not sure if it can be used effectively on while still in the salt water.
any advice would be appreciated.
If so, should engine be running or off when using.

I assume what you are talking about is your shore water hook up which you use instead of tank water. It is nice when at a dock because you get fresh water with plenty of pressure and no loud pump. For flushing the engines, give b3s you will need to out on muffs or maybe PO put inline hook ups in the engine room. Maybe others know something I don't so let them chime in also.
