Engine cut off!!!

Hello everyone! Thanks in advance for the help. Yesterday I was out on the bay cruising about 35mph when the engine completely turned off. I thought I somehow disabled the engine with the kill switch but when I checked the switch it was in the run position. I had full electrical power and everything worked except the motor would not turn over. After about 30 minutes of trying everything I called Sea Tow. The captain with Sea Tow informed me of a reset button on the top of the engine. I located the button and after resetting it the engine started right up. My question is, what would have cause this switch to trip. Though I don't know a lot about boat engines, I take care of mine by doing all the maintenance worked advised by the dealer. Anyway, just looking for some in site. Appreciate the help. By the way I own a 2007 Sun Deck 220 with a Mercury 5.0 and Bravo 3 drives. The engine has approximately 90 hours. Thanks again

That reset button is basically a safety cut off switch reset. The computer will trip it like a circuit breaker in a variety of situations. Read your owners manual to get a run down of them. Go thru the list and look for any of those reason that may have caused it. If you cannot find one you can do one of two things. Ignore it as it may have been just a one time glitch. Or two go to a reputable mechanic and have him hook up the computer and scan for the trouble code that set it off

It is a 50 amp breaker located on the top of the engine. In both my boats it was red and has "50 amp" printed above it.

There is also another circuit breaker on my boat just like that one but located near the battery and has the power cable going to it and then to a distribution block.

I had a similar scenario a few weeks ago and I checked both circuit breakers and still wouldn't crank. I ended up being towed in and as soon as I pulled it out of the water I figured out I forgot to check the fuses. I had blown the ignition fuse. Just thought I'd share.
