I always feel the need that if I post here I must give the following info, Not A diesel boat guy but an Owner of a Peterbilt. lots of info on diesel here, just a different application.
My Pete has a pyrometer. Fancy way of saying exhaust temp. She idles at about 300-400. Cruises 65mhp, flat road 500-600 and pulls heavy loads up hill 900+. The Cool Down is essential after a crusing. This is for the turbo bearings. Now I'll give you a schenero to ponder.
When I arrive home from the east I must climb a 6% grade for 2 miles to the to my driveway at the top. I back in and MUST idle it for 5-10 minutes. I literally beat the snot out of her to climb the hill to power down at the top as soon as I back into the driveway on my "sightside" (approaching my driveway on my left. This way I can see out the driver's window backing up my trailer.)
Gary mentioned about using the blowers. While Cooling down the truck I also run the engine (Radiator) Fan. The heat next to the rig is unbearable, you just don't want to stand near it. Hear I am trying to get the underhood (in your case engine room) temp down.
If I come from the west I am on flat ground and pass my driveway, make a left on McCormic Ct, Turn around and now approach my driveway again on my "Sightside" as if I came up the hill. The time it takes me to go to the end of McCormic lane and turn around and come back to me counts as my cooldown. I'm running slow thru a residence here. By the time I back into my driveway and get my bags, cooldown complete.
Use this as mentioned in above posts. Coming into the marina and docking can count as your cooldown. Your not running hard there. The exhaust temp is really low now.
Now my question. Do Diesel Boats have a pyrometer?
