I want to flush my engine and out drive with fresh water and then a antifreeze mix, my question is where do i connect the hose. i have a 1998 5.7 mercruiser v8 with alpha outdrive. also how do i tell if the manifold and risers are no good, there is some rust on the risers, i am not sure if they were ever replaced.

You get a flush attachment commonly called muffs or ear muffs, fits over the water intake holes on the lower unit, get a good set, you can buy a kit to put the antifreeze in and it will connect to the muffs also. Manifolds and risers need to be removed and inspected so you can see the water passages that is where the problems will be if you have any. If they have never been off they a probably due replacement especially if you are in saltwater. External rust not bad it the internal rust you worry about.

Midway essentially covered the routine you need to follow for winterization. I used the kit shown in this link http://www.boatersworld.com/product/178050035.htm on my 240SD.

As far as your risers are concerned, on an eight year old boat it's definitely time to pull the risers and elbows for inspection. External rust is the first sign that you have a problem. It could just be the gaskets but you need to get them pulled and checked ASAP.

risers should be the same temp on both sides while running at cruising speed and should remain touch-able. meaning they should not burn you when you touch them. warm, even hot, but NOT scalding. dont try this with your manifolds, however. :smt018 that will leave a mark even if they are perfect.
