Do you know if the 1987 300da had the engine warning alarm option for low oil pressure and hi temp? Mine does not make any buzzing when the keys are first turned on. Does yours?

I cant answer your question about your boat, but I can tell you that I added exhaust hose temperature sensors this spring. In theory, if the raw water pump ever fails, and the exhaust heats up past the setpoint, the alarm will sound and so will the LED that I put in the dash.

I've read that once the temp sensors in the engine sound the alarm, it's usually too late for the exhaust flappers and hoses. For this reason, I chose to buy the exhaust temp alarm instead of installing a temp switch and alarm in my boat. Oil is another story though, I wouldnt mind having an oil switch to sound an alarm. An oil or temp switch is probably less than $20 and a piezo alarm is probably less than that on amazon. If it turns out your boat doesnt have the alarms, I am sure you could add it yourself for not alot of coin.

My 88 300da has both.

If not, the sensors are cheap enough to buy and install along with a buzzer/light from Radio Shack. Definitely a good idea to install them if you don't have them.

Cole-Hersee M40177BP Engine Warning Kit makes a kit. $25 on e bay. Oil and water temp. I ordered 2.

I posted a similar question last season and got no replies at all. You didnt get a real answer but at least you got some option replies.

The book said the buzzer should sound if you turn the key on, after a few seconds, but mine didnt. But i would hear the alarm sound if i turned the engine over. It would beep right as the starter engages. I had an overheat issue at the end of the season and no alarm went off so obviously im not setup correctly either. So now i have an overheated engine with water in all 8 cylinders with the rings rusted to the cylinder walls.

Have someone check your alarms to be sure they are working properly.

I do my own work. I ordered 2 new kits for the boat.
I need to verify with other 1987 sundancer owners to verify that this was an option on the boat or maybe it came with later models.??

Just a thought..........

Wouldnt the type of alarms be dependant on how old the motors are? and not the year of the boat? My 03 350 Mag has the guardian system that monitors most everything. Not sure if your engines are original or not.

What type of kit did you order? Might be something I need to look into getting as well.
