engin compartment blower

Just a general question... is it recomened to run the blower the whole time the boat is underway or only a few minutes before starting? having conflicting info

I would imagine it depends on how good the air flow to your engine room is.

I don't run blower whilst on the move, but I've got two good six inch air hoses with pickups forcing air in.

I run the blower until I get the boat out of the marina and am above 1600 rpms. Always with the generator running.

Run the blowers if the engines are running period. If we are idling in or out I don't have to remember to turn them back on. They are made to last forever so use them.

My manual states to run blower at no/slow speeds because the natural air flow is low at those conditons.

I run it all the time. Why take chances. After 15 years I had to replace the blower, cheap enough insurance.

Some with fuel/starting problems say it keeps the engine room cooler and it helps with hot start problems.

The usual "RULE Turbo" blowers in most SR's are not rated for continuous duty - but are only $25-$40 to replace. But they are very noisy. So I have bought 2 Jabsco 35770 blowers which are supposed to be a lot more "quiet" and rated for 10000 hours of operation. They will be installed once I find someone small enough to push in there to replace them and I'll report back.

I have done noise measurements "before" so now I just need an "after" figure

Noise with blowers only on - 62.5 dBa (slow) at the middle of the table
Noise with Genny on full load - 63 dBa
Noise with Genny and blowers 66.2 dBa.
