In trying to determine my slow draining shower, I discovered the emergency sump is regurgitating water. When overflow water meets ithe emergency sump pump, it is not automatically turning on. I can manually turn it on and it sucks the water out. I then have to manually turn it off and at that point, at least half of the water spits back into the indented hull area surrounding the pump. Whats the problem/s here?

Under your cabin step should be a shower sump box.

Remove the cover with a screwdriver, clean the sump out with a rag and a bucket of water, put the cover back on.

You need to clean that out about once per year depending on how often you use it.

About your bilge pump, are you saying your float switch is not working? Are you sure? Put some water in your bilge to test it if you want. When I intentionally flood my bilge the water gets several inches deep before the float switch turns the bilge pump on. At least monthly, and really I do it more often than that, I get into my engine compartment and turn the dial on the float switch for the bilge pump to confirm the float switch(es) and bilge pump(s) are working.

There should be no check valve in a bilge pump hose. So yes, the small amount of water that remains in the hose will back feed when the pump shuts off.

The sump box is clean and draining fine. Its not the bilge. There's another sump and float switch pair just outside the sump box that the manual calls an "emergency sump". Thats the one thats not turning on/off by itself and is spitting water back into the area once I manually turn it off.

Do you see a float switch for this pump?

On page 105 the float switch is #24

Are you saying if you turn the little dial on this float switch the pump comes on but the float switch gets hung up in the on position?

Yes the float and sump pump there are right beside each other just like they are INSIDE the sump box. Two pairs of sump and float.

Thank you. I got it.

That might be whats happening. It just keeps running until i turn the switch on the float again to turn it off.

But then there's the other issue of the water coming back into the area too when i do turn the switch off again.

If the float switch is getting hung up in the on position I would investigate this further. It’s possible a simple cleaning would correct this issue.

About the water returning thru the pump after the pump shuts off, that is how it’s designed to work. Let’s say they put a check value in this line. Over time gunk could clog the valve. Also, over winter the water in this line could freeze and cause the line to crack.

Consider removing that last little bit of water with a rag.

The shower water should not get into this area. It should stay in the sump box.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, will do that today.

Water coming back is somewhat normal but as the previous poster stated, you might need to clean out your check valve. Also, these switches fail quite often since they removed the mercury from them a few years back.
