Electrical outlet in engine room?

Well I just added a receptacle in my engine room up on the side near the batteries for a dedicated charger / maintainer then came in to see whats new on Clubsearay and read this disheartening post. LOL
Hmmm. It's probably even worse having it directly above the batteries given the outgassing of hydrogen gas! You'd be MUCH better off doing like the factory would have done and connect the charger via a hardline to an unused 120V breaker (or adding one).

You don't want to mess around with this - these are the sort of accidents that we read about in the newspapers when things get installed wrongly without doing the research, first. At least you caught it early.

Did you buy a charger that is rated for gasoline bilge use?

I’m glad this thread is rather new.. my old charger is hardwired in and has died on me I am looking to replace it with this noco charger that has a 3 prong cord. I see adding a gfi outlet is a no go what other options do I have?? I have traced the 110v for the water heater to be in a blue game box that looks to be sealed. I would rather not cut the 3 prong cord due to warranty on the battery charger

I'm not sure there's really a better way to do it - cut the cord and hardwire it the way the existing one is. However, that looks to be a pretty lightweight charger. Take a look at the ProMariner Pro Nautic. I'm not sure what size boat you have or your uses - but I would look at AT LEAST a PM 20-amp, if not 30-amp charger (check existing wire sizing/fuses).

Hmm...I had never heard of Noco until just now. The plug seems problematic. I also find it a bit odd that it does say it's ignition protected though the warranty states:

"Obey all signs and instructions. Do not operate charger in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere, including fueling areas or areas which contain chemicals or particles such as grain, dust or metal powders."

I will be the last person to dog Northern Tool but.....I might suggest returning that charger if you can and stick with a more well known brand like the Guest you are removing or ProMariner.

I can return the NOCO to battery source no problem there. It is a sea ray DA 260 with genset and water heater. It honestly stays in my boat shed most of the year and we take it 2 weekends a month for a overnighter during summer months i am in Mobile AL so when we sleep the generator is running. The crazy part is the one that died was a 10amp and a 20 amp i can not find anything like that in the new chargers.... I know im not the 1st person to replace the onboard charger i just am at a stand still of what to do as far as hardwiring it.

I'm not sure what you mean - did you look at the Pro Mariner I mentioned?

Check your parts manual, but I'm pretty sure a 20a charger was standard - that's what was in mine, anyways.

The Noco in the pic is a charger and maintainer for cars and motorcycles. The plug is probably the safest part of the set up. It has jumper cable type battery clamps for the connections to the batteries. That should be a clue that this has no place in a boat's engine room. You need to purchase a marine charger.

Mine didn't come with one, but Frank W. gave instructions on how he installed his. I now have a GFI outlet with a waterproof cover plate installed for the last 3 seasons and love it.
