so I'm worried I've got some sort of electrical gremlin living in my boat, since I took delivery last fall I've lost my fridge, the raw water pump on the A/C, and the freshwater system pump. all these systems worked fine prior to me taking ownership. lost the fridge on the first day of ownership (a wonderful sendoff gift really) and started the season with the other two failing (a wonderful welcome back). is there something I could be doing wrong concerning power hook up and turning on and off systems? as I replace these things should I start running inline fuses? I've been so laser focussed on individual repairs I'm just now looking at the big picture and realizing that it seems all very coincidental that they should fail in 5 weekends of use.

Greg, where you able to bench test any of the pieces? I'm curious if you're just seeing the effect that many years of a high humidity environment causes on wires, specifically the connections. It might be a good idea to go through the various locations on your boat that has connections. Remove, clean, protect and reinstall. There's a lot of areas, but take it one section at a time.

On the other hand, if they are original... well, 24 years ain't that bad!

My boat doesn't like the shore power turned on if the appliances are in the on position. Red light comes on saying reversed polarity.

Have to turn everything off. Then shore power on. Then appliances.

well I did bench test the fridge and it was definately toast, I never got a chance to bench test the raw water pump for the A/C because it magically rolled off the dock into the drink (long sad story) I haven't tried the freshwater pump yet, that'll be this weekend. you're right 24 yrs aint bad, although I'm pretty sure the A/C pump wasn't that old. and the fresh water pump doesn't "look" original either. I just don't want to be replacing these kinds of things every season beause frankly I can't afford the extra $1200 a year in pumps and refrigerators!!

I do not think you are doing anything wrong - these things fail as they get older! Although it wouldnt hurt to possible re-evaluate how you turn on your appliances in conjunction with switching on your shore power. We feel your pain. Every year I replace some sort of pump or switch. Last year was a new bilge pump switch and also replaced the shower sump box. This year the fresh water pump died and replaced that as well.

Ever hear the saying "Things happen in threes"? It's an old saying, but it seems as though it applies here!:smt001
