Had to share this one... Our marina is owned and run by Milwaukee County a union run marina. Last year the needed more money in the n budget and raised our rates by 9%. The county has now run out of money.
Idea! Get all the Marina tenants to pay early and give them 20% off!

Their statement was:
Receive a 20% discount
when you book your 2010 seasonal slip rental and pay in full by Dec. 1, 2009

I'll buy that now what do you think will happen in 2010?

Mike

I got a call from a marina we were at 3 years ago, I have been back to see a couple of friends and they are less than half full. The manager says "just tell me what kind of discount is needed to return your boat to the marina" He then said, we are basically taking what people will pay, so make any kind of offer and they will agree.

Wish they had those kind of deals in SoCal.

Wow, New Buffalo was full last year - all slips taken. No such discounts on where I boat, unless you call no price increases for 2010 a discount

The marina was 96% full last year. I hear that will change for 2010 as un-employent here is among highest. I feel bad for those w/out jobs. Just glad we are busy at work!

Normal 45 foot slip fee Milwaukee is $3,947.
W/ 20% discount $3157.60 = $+790.00
$ 790.00 = Pleased!

My marina has a 10 boat waiting list. No discounts here also. :smt021.

The median 35’ uncovered slip rate in Phoenix is $481/month, including utilities. This is taking into consideration the four closest marinas to Central Phoenix. None are offering any major concessions to speak of, and physical occupancy is speculated at 88% .

I guess I didn’t get the memo concerning the “good” Phoenix economy.

We spend a lot of time in Harbor Springs, MI. They have a 7 day limit for transients. The last two summers, they've asked us to extend. I think we stayed 18 days last year and moved because we got tired of our slip. Going past Leland, the harbor master tried to talk us into stopping in but we had to be somewhere else. Definitely seeing a drop off in demand in Michigan. Prices have not been effected that I can see.

I got one of the last slips at my current marina. I held 2 slips for the summer in order to get into the new marina.

Both are great marinas, however, the location of the new marina is better suited for my boating style. Great discount for paying for 12 months in advance at the current marina. The former marina was the same price paying quarterly.

I am not really a fan of publicly operated marinas. The 20 year waiting line speaks volumes. When I got transferred to VA from Italy in 1991, I went to a Navy run marina on the Chesapeake. There waiting list was 30 years long. Understandable. The Navy marina had floating concrete docks and full security and was less than $500 per year. The private marina across the inlet was over $1500 per year, less security and the docks were nowhere near the quality.

Bottom line is the entire community is paying for that waiting list.

We were thinking about getting a slip this year and started getting quotes - $5,300 for a covered 33' slip. I think we'll trailer for another summer at that rate. Heck, at $40 a night for a transient slip, we can bounce around for FOUR MONTHS before we'd break even. My theory is there will be less deposits placed this winter due to the economy and the marinas will start to get worried about occupancy early spring and offer discounts. We'll see.

My previous marina for a 35' boat was $1,655 for a slip that includes 30 amp service, water, & satellite TV. They claim to have a waiting list. My new marina slip will cost $3,000 next season and is the most expensive on the river but is a much wider slip with a much bigger pool to maneuver in. There were two other open slips when I signed my contract a month ago. Neither marina has raised or lowered their fees for next season.

Two seasons ago i payed 400 for the last 9 weeks of the season in bay city at a private yacht club.Last year i payed 300 for the season at municipal docks in Sebewaing Mi. this was for my 2655 bayliner.I got a great opportunity to buy a slip at the yacht club last fall, there are more available at various prices .We dont have a gas doc or mechanic or storage but we have nice bath houses ,laundry facility, portable pumpout, and are the first entrance into the saginaw river to name a few ammenities .I still have to pay taxes (write off) and association fee witch varies depending on weather dredging for blowboats is necessary, but it sure beats the 1500 everywhere else.we also have newer plastic adjustible docks .Check out sunset shores yacht club there is a list of rentals and for sales there.
