What is the procedure for turning on the water system in a 1996 Sundancer 250, if it hasn't been used for a while (months)?
 
If you are referring to the on board fresh water system; Just fill the tank, turn on the switch & open a faucet. Since the system has been dormant you may want to flush all of the lines real good. Depending on how long it sat & if sat empty or with water in it, a little water system cleaner may be in order as well.

Either way, fill the tank, clean the screen, open up the lines & check for leaks as the lines flush.
 
1. Check the hot water tank (if it has one) to make sure the pop-off and drain is closed
2. Fill the holding tank
3. Turn on all faucets and completely drain
4. Repeat steps 2-3 until satisfied its flushed
 
I would put in the tank a cup of bleach and then fill it with water, while it is filling turn on your water system switch and turn on your hot water spigot in the galley untill you smell the bleach, then turn it off and the do the same with your cold water, continue filling the tank untill it is full. Let it sit with the full tank with the water/bleach solution in the lines and the tank for 24 hours then start flushing it out, run the tank empty alternating hot and cold water untill it starts spiting, then fill with fresh water and repeat flushing 2-3 times to get it clean. A little bleach remaining in the water system is fine and not harmfull (even to drink, not that I do....)

I do this procedure every Spring after my boat comes out of Winter storage.
 
If you are really unsure of the status of the system I would not fill the tank full to start with. If there is a crack in the tank or a leak its a lot easier to deal with a few gallons of water vs 50 or 100.:grin:

Once the status of the structure is confirmed I would move onto the suggestions in the above posts.
 
There's water system switch at the helm for running on battery but I'm not sure what switch to use when on shore power. Here's a photo for the electric panel. Which one turns on the water?

Actually, you just use the 12v switch since shore power is charging your battery through the battery charger (AC converter), which should be on any time you're on shore power. Be sure to turn off the water pump when you leave the boat though in case of leaks.
 
OK, tried the 12V switch at the helm. Light on switch went on but no water.
 
I'm guessing a little here since your boat is a different model than what I have, but isn't there a water pump breaker on the DC power panel? If there is, make sure it's on. If it's on and no action (or noise) from the pump, I'd begin to suspect that the pump has gone bad. Sorry I can't help any more than this!

Thanks everybody! I'll check the power at the pump... uh, as soon as I find it. Do you know where that is?
 
I would start by cheking for power at the pump. If it has power then check the ground. If you have good power and ground then the pump is bad and will need to be replaced. If there is no power then you will have to trace the electrical circut back to find the point where the power is lost. Start and the switch, fuse or breaker and the various wire connections. Shouldn't be to hard to find and fix if you have some basic electrical skills. Good luck.
