In late October I need to make the drive between LaGuardia airport and Bedford, MA., a suburb of Boston. First, what's the optimal way to go when considering distance and preferred highways? And if I decided to take an additional hour or two in getting there is there a more interesting, scenic route I should take? I can't add more than a couple of hours because I'm expected for an event in Boston that evening.

Hopefully some of you local boys can give me some direction?

Thanks

Why not land in Boston Logan?

i agree with Mike, I'd fly into Logan. It will take you as long to drive from LGA to New Bedford as it does to fly from Texas to LGA.....on a good day. But, if you insist on driving it's a pretty straight forward drive, mostly on I-95 through CT, RI and MA. If you only want to detour for an hour or two you might want to drive down to Newport if you've never been there.

Better yet!! Fly into Providence RI. My sister lives in Westport Mass, right near New Bedford. I fly into providence next month. Plenty to see around the south shore.

Copb8tx,

Do you mean "Bedford", or "New Bedford". These are two different places. Bedford is off 128 on rt 3, bordered by Burlington, Lexington and Concord. The old Hanscom AFB was located there. I think this is where you mean.

New Bedford is located in the Narraganset Bay Area and is a little too far to be considered a Boston Suburb.

If you meant Bedford, disregard the New Bedford instructions.

LGA to Boston has to be at least five hours by car. I have not done that route, but have driven to NYC and North Jersey many times.

Getting from Logan to Bedford could take you upwards of two hours during rush hour. During non rush hour it is more like 45 minutes. I used to work in Burlington and timing the drive to from the airport from the office was always a challenge.

You might consider flying into Manchester NH. It is farther away, the drive will be about 90 minutes. But Manchester is a small well laid out airport. You literally walk out of the building into the parking garage. I use it a lot because getting out of the airport grounds is faster, and the drive is always a consistent time. The combination of on airport congestion and traffic out of Logan might make Manchester more attractive if you are going to arrive during rush hour.

Yes I meant Bedford, not New Bedford. I'm driving because I've not been up that route and it seemed interesting. We'll be making the drive on a Saturday morning so I'm hoping traffic isn't all that bad in NYC or Boston.

Here is the route I was thinking of: http://goo.gl/maps/XpQi4

There are a couple of options.

If you are looking for speed, I always cut off 95 north in New Haven onto 91 north to Hartford and then take 84 to the Mass Pike and then the Pike east to 95 north ( rt. 128 to those of us local) up to Bedford.

Or, you can get off 95 North at Rt. 395 and head north toward Worcester, Ma. and stop at either of the two casinos for a little R&R ( Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods). Both are fun and offer full casino resort offerings. then continue north on Rt. 395 to the Mass Pike East to 95 north.

If you do take 95 north all the way, certainly Mystic Seaport or Newport offer some great sight seeing opportunities.

Ahhh, since it's Bedford I would take the Hutch to the Merritt to 91 to 84 to the Mass Pike. The only touristy thing on that route is Sturbridge Village. From LGA to Bedford should take about 3-3 1/2 hours on a Saturday morning. From Logan on a Saturday morning it's a half hour to 45 minute drive but you could stop and see Boston on the way.
