Drive Stand - CHEAP!

Yes it is, I need to make two more for my Formula drives. I need to pull both drives and the engines...have a simple free solution to engine storage with the transmissions bolted on??? LOL

Hmmm... that one might be a little more difficult!

So I made a custom stand about 3 years ago that cost $50 in steel. Not nearly as cheap and easy to build though, as you'll need to have lying around a welder and an engine stand (had the engine stand, friend had the welder). http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/9064-Custom-Homemade-Outdrive-Stand

Nice thing about the engine stand is that it puts the drive at the perfect height for working on it...like when replacing the water pump, etc.

Anyway...just one more idea. :smt001

Dennis....

I bought a length of 2x8 yesterday and I'm about to build one of those cheapo stands today but before I do.....

looking at the picture....it seems to appear to me that there's a possibility of the outdrive tipping forward and maybe even falling over forward. What's preventing that from happening?

Also in Prater's picture....what's preventing the drive from tipping forward?

With the way the weight of the drive is distributed, it rests nicely on the gear housing. You're probably thinking "But, wait, that forward end of the gear housing is rounded". Don't worry - it won't fall. That stand you see in my picture has now been in use for about 3 or 4 years (after I was done with it at home, I donated it to the shop). Obviously it gets a whole lot more use (and rolling around) at the shop than any of us would give it at home. Now, I'm not saying that you can give it a push and then hop on for a ride... but it does sit in there pretty solid. If you're worried about it, just always push it from the driveshaft end. It will NOT fall over by itself - someone would have to bump/fall into it quite hard for that to happen.

The drive on my stand probably weighs twice the amount of a bravo or alpha and it is very solid. in fact half the skeg is gone and it is still solid. I just take care when i push it around but it never even acts like it wants to tip over.

Thanks guys....just finished building mine. Gotta go outside to the vehicle now and grab the outdrive and bring it in. This should be much better than what I used last year to hold the drive.

Thanks.

Just an annual bump for this year's cold-climate crew... :smt001

For what it's worth, this one is still in use at the shop. If you'd like to make a it a little stronger, though, you could add some triangular, 1/2" pieces of plywood on the bottom, middle (both ends)

Just built mine for tomorrow's drive service, no casters yet but she'll do for now. Thanks!

Here is one I made with scraps a few years ago, whatever style you come up with a stand is a must have for drive work.

awesome stand so easy to build why didn't I think of that.I hate to admit it but normally with the prop off I would just stuff the scag into the ground it would look like I grow an outdrive in my yard.
