Here is the situation. We went fishing this weekend and the drive is making this growl when turning to the port. We get home and I tear into it to change out the u-joint crosses. I can't get the darn drive off. I pulled the leg off by pulling the bearings out of the top end. The shaft is rusted in place. I have tried a 12 pound slide hammer and lots of spray, but no budge!!!!! I dont want to scrage the tranny. It was rebuild 2 years ago. Can I cut the bellows out and use a propane torch without damaging the tranny? Has anyone built a puller that has worked well?

Good news is the bearings and gears in the drive leg look like new!

Ok so here is the plan. I am going to pull the gimbal apart so I can get to the u-joint. Then I will pull the crosses out with a tool I have built. Then I will use the yoke of the joint to mount a second puller I have yet to build to apply force to the tail shaft of the transmission without damaging anything. Ill post pictures of the operation. Clean up the mess and put her back together.

I think you all suck for not say one work to help on this. "Not even one your screwed dude" ;(

most times you can use the trim rams by inserting a spacer between the top of the drive and the transom.
SLOWLY use trailer mode and space as necessary

To 10 hours of swearing pulling, bushing, one or two bloody knuckles. I broke the gimbal bearing retaining ring, but I got it out. The bearing was seized to the shaft. 15 tons to get it off the shaft. I would say that the last installer did not line it up right.

KC marine in Bellingham Washington has all the drive parts in stock for a good price. They will have them here before the weekend. They did my tanny, and they have built a TR-2 drive leg for me as well. Now I just have to clean everything up and paint the gimbal.
