Here's my dilemma. My 01 310 has the original Lorance 3500 digital depth sounder. I've just purchased a Raymarine chartplotter A70D. So I can remove the Lorance transducer and enlarge
the hole for the A70 or drill a new hole next to it and have two sounders. Will the transducers work being within 2" of each other?

You may want to check with Raymarine but I doubt they will work that close togeather.

From my experience, only if you turn one of them off. I had a Ranger bass boat equipped with a flasher and an Eagle fish locator, the transducers were 12 ft apart, if both were on at the same time, the flasher display went solid red regarless of the gain setting, and the pixels on the fish finder all flashed....turn one off, and the function of the unit left on would return to normal.

How much larger is the new transducer compared to the current one? Unless the boat was designed for it, I wouldn't want two holes poked that close together.

The original one is 2". The new one is 2 3/8". I guess i should ditch the old sounder. I was just trying to keep it as a backup.
