Dri-Dek to replace carpet?

We are thinking of replacing the original snap-in carpet in the aft cockpit area of our 11 year old 270 Sundancer. The backing on the carpet is becoming a problem because of its age and has always been a problem when it gets wet. The product that we are considering is Dri-Dek. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with it and would be willing to share the good and bad. We hate to give up our carpet but the Admiral* is getting old and has trouble keeping the carpet clean and dry. We are looking for something that can just be rinsed off and allowed to dry after the grand kids have spilled drinks and other sticky stuff after a day of fun on grandma and grandpa’s boat.

Dri deck looks nice, not too pleasant for your feet and any bigger debris (leaves, small stones etc) are impossible to remove with water hose, they just stay inside those small squares.

I used Dri-Dek in the cockpit of a former 370DB with mixed results. IT was harder on our feet than I anticipated, it moved constantly despite many attempts to install snaps, and it allowed the dirt to fall through and, yet, remain in clear sight. On the other hand, it was easy to clean and showed little or no wear.

I installed dri-deck in the storage areas under the seats in my cockpit. It works well for those types of applications but I wouldn't want it on the floor of my cockpit. It won't be comfortable in bare feet and it will move around on you as well. The bare gel-coat is a much better choice if you don't want to replace your carpeting.

Thank you very much for the replies! You've all provided exactly the information we were looking for and now know to skip the Dri-Dek! On to Plan B -- new carpet! There's no way we can leave the cockpit floor bare as it turns into a frying pan for bare feet in our 100 degree summer weather.

Dave and Peggy,

Please post what you find out about the carpet and the need for a template. I suspect you will find that you need one, that was the answer I got when I asked over a year ago. But maybe they have one now.

I also need to replace the carpet in my 96 270DA, same boat as yours. There are three pieces that need replaced in the cockpit in mine, and I assume yours also. I could make a template if I had to for mine. The teal color, which it looks like you have, as I do, is no longer available. They did send me two samples of off-white carpets they use for Sea Rays.

Hi Dave,
We got a very quick reply from John, the owner of Snap in Carpet and he says they do have a template for our boat now. We're getting a sample of the "Sea Ray Dunes" berber carpet to see what sort of backing it has on it before ordering. The price is definitely right -- he quoted only $456. for the 3 pieces, including snaps. They send the snaps and you have to put them on as the location is different on every boat.

I really don't want any more of the dark teal as it shows everything and after having berber at home for many years, we know it wears like iron and cleans up easily.

HTH!
Peggy
