I almost forget to do mine... 830 gallons of fuel from 2011 one stamp later and about 30 minutes of paperwork I've got another $150 coming back in fuel tax refunds - enough to fund a trip to Bald Head Island :)

of course i spent $3710 in fuel to get $150 back - just seems piddly.

What forms are they? I have, let me say "PLENTY" of fuel in a years time that would love to get something back on. Thanks for the heads up!!

The initial thread has the website listed just before RByrns signature.

it is GAS-1201 form at http://www.dor.state.nc.us/downloads/motor.html You fill it out the old fashioned way (on paper, then mail it). After you file it the first time you will get a letter from the state with a passcode to enter it online from that point forward. You can claim all the way back to 2009 but make sure you have receipts to back it up. The first filing you have to send in the receipts, after that you don't have to. Have a friend that was audited the 3rd year and he didn't save all the receipts. IT ended up costing more than the refund to get out of.

Does NC collect motor fuel tax at marina gas pumps?

Yes. By law all pumps charge tax.

Mick and Denise, you are most likely buying "off road diesel" . Sorry we dont get refunds, because we didnt pay road tax when we bought.

Thanks for the info! My accountant is working on it now. I definitely will go back the 3 years on this one. Thanks!

Check with the Marinas you usually get fuel from. I don't know much about the diesel side of things. But he is right. If you are buying off road diesel the taxes for road use are already removed.

For gasoline, all pumps are required to charge tax by law regardless of use. But i know that does not apply to diesel.
