dog training

Just take them along, give them breaks on shore a few times a day and they'll love it. Our Golden Retriever and Lopsided A$$hole (Lhasa Apso) go everywhere we go on the boat. If we anchor, we just have to make sure they get a break right before we head to bed at night. If it's hot, they'll swim in to shore and then return when they are finished. Well, the Golden will the other is a pain in the rear but she's a camel and rarely has to go!

The Golden can crawl up the swim ladder on her own and the Lhasa will just cling to the motor if it's in the up position. One night the Lhasa had to go so she jumped off the swim step in the middle of the night, swam to shore and then returned. The only problem was she can't get back up on the boat! So I heard whimpering and after a while got up to inspect what was going on. I could hear her but I couldn't find her. I got down on the swim step and poked my head underneath and out she came! Scared the crap out of me!

If you have cats, I've seen some that love the boat and others that just hide the whole time. The dogs are great at night because we don't have to worry about anybody coming on board without our knowledge. The Lhasa is a watchdog designed just for that reason. Her only job in life is to wake the BIG dogs!

We boat with 2, 80+ lb Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They love the boat but they don't like the water which is great as we never have wet, sloppy dogs on board. But they really let us know when someone approaches that they don't know. And I pity anyone that gets on that boat when they are on it alone. They love to lounge in the sun and when we are underway, they are sound asleep. We have a lot of fun with them. With the exception of the 6 AM pee call.

Don't forget life vests for the pets. We have had many people tell us how their dogs have drowned.

Is damage a problem, I was thinking about the cushions at the aft cockpit area? I can see a Golden jumping up on those a putting a hole in the vinyl? We also have a Golden but are just starting out so I am not really sure how she will react, but she loves the water.

Seats will be a problem. We lay towels down and then rubber band them to the seats. Just teach the dog when its sit time and when its swim time.

Our GR has spent time on both boats and no damage to the seats on either one. She likes to sit on the aft or drivers seat and look out. We usually put towels on it, but forget or she gets out there in the morning before we have had a chance to clear the dew off the seats. I think the key is getting them in the water so they will swim. That will tire them out and cool them off so all they want to do is sleep!

Thanks, I was also thinking of having the canvas person make a cover for the rear bench seat just incase the kids forget and the dog jumps up. I think swimming is the best idea, a well excerised dog is usually little trouble.

Have a 300 sea ray and im planning on taking my [SIZE=-1]weimweiner and two weiner dogs. Neither aare crazy about water. Some people Iv'e heard tow a small boat and carry them to shore.

A large shower rug on the seat works great. the rubber backing keeps it from sliding too much. Worked for my 250DA and my Boxer..... but she still HATED BOATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PIA on a boat but damn I miss that dog:smt089

Buffy loves the boat (she actually gets excited when we pull into the marina on Fiday nights) but she does not swim to shore. We need a dingy and use it about 4 times a day.

I have actually put my chihuahua on a knee board and swam her to shore to pee. She is the biggest PIA ever on the boat. I envy other people who have dogs that love the water, even with a lifevest on mine climbs to the top of my head.

Good luck with your dog and boating, I am sure it will be a great experiance. Goldens are so great, you won't have any problems.

We have a yellow lab and he is great on the boat. He is even trained well enough that if he has to pee while we are under way, he will go to the edge of the swim platform.
