To my horror, I pulled out my policy in the dead of this past (unusually cold) winter and after I had heard of boats sunk or damaged by freezing in my area. I read the following deep in the policy document:
"Exclusions
We will not pay for...
Damage to covered property caused by or resulting from freeze; however, this does not apply to a yacht or tender which has been professionally winterized by a person or entity other than an insured ;"
I contacted my broker and they have found a new policy that doesn't have such an exclusion. They did tell me that it's not an uncommon clause. My previous policy was with Catlin. So, passing this on and recommending folks take a look at their policy before the freezing starts.
