For those members with diesel boats large enough to have a significant dingy like a wave runner on the swim platform, what do you do when you need more gas for the wave runner?

The boat would have a large diesel fuel tank so you could go a long way without needing more diesel fuel.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as a diesel wave runner so you must need gas.

The issue would be gasoline for the wave runner.

Do you have a 30 or so gallon gas tank installed then a small fuel hose + pump to fill the wave runner?

Nope, I have the tank in the dinghy, lasts about a day of heavy use. Then I have a 1 gallon can on the boat, or in the dinghy, just in case. And my iphone so I know where all of the fuel docks are. I have about a 100 mile range on my dinghy so it hasn't been an issue. I also have a VHF on the dinghy so I can call sea tow if I run out of fuel somewhere.

My dinghy holds 8 gallons of gas which was a whole season's worth last year. Generally we top off the dinghy with gas when we re-fuel the big boat (which is very often).

It's not a problem for us either, our dinghy has a 14 gallon tank, and that lasts quite a while. We just top it off when needed at a fuel dock.

After having diesels for a while, I don't like the idea of storing gas on the boat. I still want to make a vented container to store the propane tanks for the grill.

On long trips, we carry a 5 gallon gerry can with gas. I lash it to something in the cockpit or the rail on the foredeck. Whatever doesn't get used goes into the truck for the trip home. Usually there's just enough left to get the truck started ;-)

Our Honda has a 17 gal tank and will usually last thru a full weekend of playing around incl towing kids skiing and tubing. Scary part now is it costs almost $90 just to fill it up...a silly jet ski.

We can burn up a tank of gas on the jet ski or jet boat in a day... but there is no way I would carry a tank of gas on the boat. There is no way to remove the fumes from the bilge if fumes did get in there.

You have a blower in the ski and boat?

The dinghy has an OEM blower (Zodiac ProJet)... the jet ski doesn't... my 480 DB doesn't have blowers that are plumbed to the bottom of the bilge as required for gas fume removal. The 480 DB blowers are plumbed to the top of the engine room for heat removal...

you could always light a match and throw it in your bilge. that'll get rid of the fumes.

Like this?

My Caribe DL13 centre console has a 14 gallon tank. My two teenage sons run the dingy fairly hard on a typical weekend and we have to watch the tank to make sure that we have enough fuel. This is typically not an issue at our normal anchorage as there is a fuel dock within reasonable striking distance. If we're away from fuel for a few days, we watch the fuel usage more and the boys don't get to run the tank to the ground. It's never been a problem.

I noticed mine was "plumbed" the same way when we did the refit. There was actually only one so I left that one high and added one low. Honestly though, I wasn't thinking about fumes because of the diesel. I was thinking more air for the engines with 2 blowers exchanging the air.

Gary is just a big fume wussy. just light a cigar, when it starts burning really hot from the fumes, stop pouring gas.

My 6 gallon tank is in the transom locker as storage.I always vent the compartment before running the boat.On the hook the tank is in the dink.Works fine for us as so do the blowers.
