On documented boats does anyone know if the name of the boat needs to be visible on the boat? Even as I was filling out the Coast Guard Document paperwork I was wondering if naming the boat after my girl friend was a good idea... no, it wasn't!

The name and hailing port of a recreational vessel must be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull. The vessel name of a commercial vessel must also be marked on the port and starboard bow and the vessel name and the hailing port must also be marked on the stern. All markings may be made by any means and materials that result in durable markings and must be at least four inches in height, made in clearly legible letters of the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals. The "hailing port" must include both a place and a State, Territory, or possession of in the United States. The state may be abbreviated.

As far as naming a boat after a girlfriend... let me put it like this, will the next girlfriend go on a boat named after your ex?

1st never tell them that the boat was named after your ex, second, now no one can tell if your are talking about your boat or your ex.....better yet, find a new girlfriend with the same name. that would be a perfect.

Thanks for the info and suggestions fellas... and no Jitts3, that's the last time I will do something that stupid. As per finding a gal named Ann Darby, you are really limiting my prey James. It looks like the next girl friend will learn that Ann Darby was my dead mom's name, until I can justify spending three hundred bucks to change it.

Losing the girlfriend had to have saved you at least $300 by now. Think of it like that and change it before a potential new smokin hot girlfriend (that is normally way out of your league but out of shear luck, you pulled off the miracle move) sees the name and runs. $300 will seem cheap at that point. Gotta think ahead for the worst case scenario. This old name could rob you of memories that could last a lifetime!

You're on the right track, don't bother changing it. This will get you more action...the chicks will say awwww...kind of like walking a puppy on the beach.
