So, my dock neighbor has an older houseboat that is pretty nice. He comes up to me and tells me - Don't take this the wrong way - Sea Ray's are nice - but you guys are always working on your boats fixing stuff. He said Crownline has nicer "Paint Jobs" than Sea Rays and you don't have to fix stuff on them. He said on my boat all I have to do is turn the key.

So, what has "broken" on my Sea Ray??? You ask - Last fall was changing Oil, transmission fluid. This spring was new impellers, a few LED bulbs and new batteries and I had some wood bits stuck in my sea cock for my generator, so I removed a hose.

He has been my dock neighbor for 3 years - I have never seen him do any maintenance.

Not to bash Crownlines, but there gelcoats fade fast it seems. I think your dock neighbor is clueless on a few issues.

I agree - he is clueless. He bought his boat from someone who maintained it perfectly for 15 years. So, he has been able to get by with little maintenance. He is the same guy when - I was replacing impellers - he asked me when I started overheating. I explained - that it was preventive maintenance. I don't think he gets preventive - maybe he is related to someone else that was on this site.

What a maroon!
I am moving to a new marina and chose a berth surounded by Sea Rays! The best berth was next to a house boat....we did not take that one.:smt009

I think you'll have the last laugh when his houseboat has that inevitable melt down. Everything needs to maintained and boats simply have a lot of stuff jammed into the fibreglas. This isn't a Sea Ray issue - but a boat issue. If you wanna enjoy it - you gotta maintain it.

I had a CAT technician on my boat this week doing PM (preventative maintenance). He was there three days checking everything over and following up on the few maintenance items he found.

Basic stuff:
1. Top side adjustments.
2. Change out impellers - Starboard Engine impeller was starting to deteriorate. If PM not done, probably would find out the hard way - when the engine temperature skyrockets, hopefully not on a long crossing in crappy weather. Is that a Sea Ray (or even a CAT) problem - no! Impellers go. Doesn't matter what type of engine your running on.
3. Needed a new pump on the generator. Seals and bearings gone in the water pump. Could have rebuilt. Decided to replace. Does that have anything to do with Sea Ray (or Westerbeke) - no! Probably had more to do with running the generator in weedy or shallow and sandy conditions.

Stuff needs to be maintained!

P.S. Up in these parts, we run for cover when we see a houseboat coming! :wow: You should see these guys banging off concrete lock walls!

Always consider the source.............this guy's boat is a floating house trailer. That hardly qualifies him to make meaningful comments on brick veneer home construction.

Scott...if he is like alot of houseboat owners on Table Rock....they very rarely leave their slips.....

What's wrong with brick veneer? My father-n-laws mobile home in Starkville, MS that I lived in had this great white Z-Brick stuff in the living room... we kept the freezer with the rabbits in it on that wall....

He sounds like a guy I once knew he laugh at eveyone for having towing insurance that is until the day he broke down and had to be towed in.

A fellow boater approached me recently while I was at the marina, prior to launch this year, and might I add having just completed a most beautious clean/wax/polish on the shiny black hull of my 1 year old Sea Ray. He bash Sea Ray boats, because he heard from a friend of his that the white striping on the waterline is apt to come apart. Apparently, his friend's striping looks horrible.

Oh, should I have mentioned that he has a 9 year old 24 foot Four Winns?

I can't make this stuff up - he used furniture stain on his teak swim platform deck - it was a deep brown and got it all over the ladder and gelcoat - and he said - it will come off when I wash the boat. He didn't stain or clean it just stained it as-is. He also drains the rv/marine antifreeze in the spring from everything and reuses it. I can't help but thing that over time his antifreeze will get diluted from trapped water.

And the dueling banjos start playing...

Keep a lookout for a washer up on blocks on his deck soon.

Well, just wait until your dock neighbor starts to have issues with his houseboat, you will be the first one he will ask what to do to fix it ....

Big Al - Well you win the prize. I was walking the dog Sunday AM and I see my dock neighbor coming toward the marina that AM. Low and behold he yells, my generator is not pumping any water, do you know how that works? I said your impeller is probably shot. He opened his Sea Strainer and it was full of mud and grass and asked where the impeller is. So I showed him where it was - there was nothing left of the impeller, when we removed it. I explained that you have to fish the broken parts out. He said - I am sure it is fine. Installed new impeller and it ran for about 4 hours and shut down again.

This advice will be among the best you will receive in your lifetime: Don't argue with crazy or you will become crazy. Just laugh and walk away or comment on the weather or your local sports team.

You can't fix stupid.
Like this guy. He wishes they would invent something to keep the sun out of his eyes.
