Do you tip the guy at the gas pump?

Here in MD, you have to pump yourself. The pump guy/girl will bring the the pump nozzle to you but you have to pump it. Then they take it back to the pump. They will however pump you out. So I always give $20 because I always get pumped out when I fuel up.

I just read an article about this subject today.

It focused on the tablet check out that's become so popular and how the suggested tip options are 30, 40 and 50% in some places and it's spreading. The entitlement aspect of it was covered heavily as well.

I tip in proportion to the level or quality of service assuming that a service has actually been provided.

If you just stand there and take my money, you're on your own.

Also...what is a marina attendant?

We have nothing and nobody to assist with anything. I'm fine with it really.

It’s everywhere. I hate those things. They probably taking out taxes for the poor kid I am tipping. Just no! Tips are cash, not adding on my card.

Oh man!, I have not seen 40 and 50%, I just this past weekend saw 30% for the first time. I did notice that on that same selection there wasn't an option for 20% either. Society is getting so out of hand where this (and others) is concerned. The dinner was a little over $200 and the service was ok, but not outstanding and I had to select 25%, 27% or 30%. That pissed me off, if the dinner it self wasn't so good I don't know if I would go back there. But I will because it was one of the best meals I have had in this area.

DO you guys actually have people do the pump out for you? We get charged for a pump out, yet we have to sit there and hold the pump.
At the gas dock I use they do manage the pump out, back wash and repump. If you buy a fair amount of gas they waive the pumpout fee. That's why I double my tip

Same at our marina there are no dock hands. Either we help fellow boaters when we see them coming into our dock or were on our own. I developed my own system to leave and return to dock solo. I should give myself a tip. Lol

I tipped $20 2 weekends ago for 60 gallons of diesel, I know, the math doesn't add up. I only keep 20s on the boat though. I pump, she hands it to me.

Geez, I commented on this thread back in 2007.

This is how it is at the fuel dock at my marina. Although the pump out didn't work two weekends ago when I went there for fuel, disappointing, I wish I knew ahead of time.

They hand you the fuel pump.and handle the hose line, but they don't pump it and I actually don't want them pumping it, I prefer to do it. They will do the holding tank pump out for you as well.

I felt horrible for the girl last time. I asked to use the water hose, she handed me the end, there was no nozzle on it, I didn't pay attention, she turned it on and it shot her right in the crotch. She definitely earned her $20 tip that time.

She helps tie up the lines, asks if we need a push off when we leave as well and volunteers to untie us.

I've never pumped out my own boat, not once in 19yrs but I am the only one that has ever unscrewed the cap and put it back on. Haven't lost one yet.

Pumpouts were always free at my old marina. I switched marina this past summer...pumpouts are $10 at the fuel dock and $20 in the slip.

This is all liberal math BS....they think because of inflation that they get to up the tip percentage too. Without completely understanding that as prices for a dinner go up, their tip increases even while holding the same percentage.

And on another note: do we tip the the cashier at the grocery store that basically just passes our items over a scanner and collects money? NO.

Youse guys are sooooo spoilt. Out here in da wild west we don got nobody on the gas dock to help pump diesel or help with pumpout. :D

We fuel up at the end over every visit to the lake .This is usually our 460 , SeaDoo jet boat, Waverunner and six five gallon fuel cans. Takes about 40 minutes to do all. For pump out you have to go to another dock for that and it has 8 stations and is free to you and you do all the pump out.

We only have one diesel pump on our end of the lake so I always radio the fuel dock as I come into the break waters that I will be needing the diesel pump and one spot for unleaded.
They know us well and always have someone at both pumps to help tie up. They pump both pumps.

These are all college kids during the season and off season it will be the full time workers.

All in all it is usually around 200 to 300 gallons of fuel or more depending on how far we went and how many days we spent on the lake . We always offer a cold drink for them to have and whatever is left from our trip in the fridge and pantry we give to them and they gladly take it as the closest grocery store for them is 4 hour drive round trip. " I really don't want to pack it back home "
We get to know all these kids well and after the first couple of fill ups we have our favorites that we ask for when coming into the dock and the other dock hands know its " there " boat to fill up.

One of them usually becomes our weekly boat washer for the season and that earns that person $100.00 paid weekly via vemno.

On top of the food we give them we tip $20.00 for the big boat and $20.00 for the toys.

Our cost of fuel is very high on the lake. We paid as high as $8.60 for diesel and $7.50 for unleaded this season. YEP do the math on that one ... ouch!!! This season we ran through the big boat 1800 gallons of diesel and through the toys 600 gallons of unleaded.

All the employees get 50% off for fuel. If they are on your boat on their day off they can use their discount. Now they all know if they want to give us there discount when they are on the clock I will gladly tip a crisp $100.00. :)

As for pump out the marina offers it at the slip for $150.00. I have never used that.

Our marina offers a porter service that is free. From the parking lot to our slip is just under 1/4 mile. We always use them if we arrive in the window that they are working. We tip $40.00 for that and I will gladly do it. I have most of the porters numbers and will text them when I am 40 minutes out and they are waiting in the parking lot when we arrive or are close by.
