It was already in there when I started school. Us kids thought we were doing something important every morning, George Washington(he was the first president, the father of our country ya' know) was hanging up there on the wall watching us. I googled it, Eisenhower made the change in '54.I believe "Under God" was added by President Eisenhower in the late 50's.
Removing your hat is a sign of respect...
If you do ever say the pledge just skip those two words, I missed a couple words when I was a kid and it didn't seem to hurt anything. With what my hair looks like on a "hat day" its far more respectful of others to leave it on.
I suppose I think that whether I scream it from a mountain top or silently observe it, my patriotism is no less than someone who belts out the national anthem or the pledge of allegiance. I just prefer not to, I don't feel any pressure to reaffirm my feelings in any way, singing, reciting or hat removing or anything else for that matter. I will say the very first thing I did when I got my boat was affix a US flag to my stern, I couldn't see it otherwise. I might be the only boat on my dock that has one though.
I do not recite the pledge because I do not believe in god and I don't want to be hypocritical. I can't say under god because I don't believe it. Count me among the camp that thinks we need to roll back Eisenhower's decision.
