Do you carry a firearm/weapon in your boat for protection?

I feel rather strongly in the saying "Trust in God but lock your doors!"

While I do not feel the need to be armed I am keenly aware that I do not want to be in a scenario where I am unable to protect my family...

Crock, rather than a tri-pod I am going to duct tape a rifle to my remote spotlight. I'lll wrap a string around the trigger so I can maneuver and subdue any attackers at the same time... My neighbors will be REALLY nervous when I try and dock now...

the duct tape thing sounds good. i have no spotlight tho..

Does a flare gun count? Since we cruise Canadian waters once in a while, we can not carry a gun... Hate to lose my boat over a gun found on board by the customs guy/gal... if I were barefoot cruising in the West Indies..., then I would be carrying... but up here is pretty tame...

back to MY question, i dont care if you carry or dont...but IF you do...how do you avoid rust on the weapon and ammo???

Ammo: brass casing and lead bullet--- neither rust.

Stainless pistol: keep well and regularly cleaned and lightly oiled.

Don't go swimming with it.

Seriously though if I did carry, I don't think I'd leave it on the boat all the time only bring it with me when I'm on the boat so I don't think rust would be a factor but heck what do I know I'm a rookie at boats and don't own a gun

If your going to have a gun on-board I would suggest investing in safety rounds for the first 3 bullets in the gun.

They have very low impact ratings but would probibly stop a majority of people that were to board your vessel without permision.

This will prevent holes being shot thru your boat by accident or by bad aim.

Why just the first 3 rounds ... well thats because they WILL NOT stop someone who is doped up or found you with his wife (of course if it is the later you probibly deserve te beating) It will however stop them for a moment and with a large enough caliber it will asist them in hitting the floor.

If they continue to get up after the 5th round ... well obviously they are seriously wanting to find themselves talking to st. peter ... it would be best if you help them in that endevor

This is one of those subjects that could easily turn to heated debate. My viewpoint is that boating is for me a form of recreation. If I feel the need to be armed, and willing to take someones life while recreating....then I need to find something else to do in my leisure time.

Damn ... if I followed that methodology I couldn't

"drive"
"shop"
"hike"
"clubbing"
"boating"
or these days even go to school

I guess I am not willing to limit my recreational endevors so as to avoid the potential that scumbags may exist in that location.

Wow, this thread has had a long life. Based on the nuts that have been hijacking all the boats in south Florida I think it wouldn't hurt to be armed.

Why would you need a concealed weapons permit for your boat? If that were the case duck hunting would be ended in the united states and last I knew ducks unlimited was going strong.

Don't forget to put your gun information in your signature.

If I'm sleeping at the dock or on the hook I have a 40cal Glock with me at all times I also carry it in the arm rest of my truck. I also have a walther P22 in my nightstand for the house.

Two of my friends had home invasions in separate instances. One got tied up and taken to the ATM at gunpoint where they preceeded to take his money then throw his girlfriend in the trunk of his BMW. They left him at the ATM and took her away. I think we all know what their plans were for her but thank god she was able to pull the safety catch on the inside of the trunk and escape at a red light.

Another friend of mine that was invaded was tied up while the invaders robbed his house. while he was tied up one of the guys came over to him put a gun to his head and "click" there was no round in the chamber. They did this over and over torturing him while they robbed the house. He survived but suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, he is terrified of the dark and doesn't sleep much.

It is a travesty that people like this exist and as long as they do I will never be far from a weapon to protect my family or myself. People who are against the right to bear arms are ignorant and are waiting to become victims of trash like these people.

Sorry for the rant but it is a topic that I know all to well.

I am a gun owner and shooter. Normally I don't tote a gun around with me. My feeling is anyone who does had better know how to use it or they'll likely get themselves killed. If you're going to rely on the gun, then practice different scenarios so your reactions are automatic. No different than you might practice how to handle different boating scenarios ie..docking or picking up a MO. There are far too many people that buy a gun, run a couple boxes of shells through it and think they got everything covered.

Tim,
I'm with you. I'm not afraid of getting some blood on the walls if my home is invaded. The crooks around here are pretty bold in knowing that most people are unable to protect themselves and their property. Pitty the fool who steps across my threshold with the intention of doing harm.
