When I start my engine (Mercruiser 305, 220HP, Carb) it first has that sound if you turn the ignition when the engine is already running. That grinding sound lasts about a second then it sounds normal and the engine starts. I've had the boat about six weeks and it has always started that way cold or warm. In addition, I've never had a problem starting it just sounds bad at first and scares everyone on the boat. Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like the solenoid is sticking and not fully engaging the starter drive gear into the flywheel. Starter may be ok but a new solenoid is probably in order.

Captain Willy,
Which one, the slave Solenoid or the starter solenoid. Sorry for the dumb question but if you saw my mechanical abilities you would understand.

The starter solenoid. It could also be that the starter motor needs a few shims (to adjust it's engagement into the flywheel).
