My 1984 SeaRay Sedan Bridge has twin Crusader Motors with direct drive. One motor is right hand rotation and the other is left hand rotation. I want to add new distributors with electronic ignition. I want to know if the distributors have to be one with a right hand rotation and the other with a left hand rotation? If so where could I find the distributors? I am north of Denver, CO.

Just put a kit in that replaces the breaker points. Don't need to replace the entire distributor.

SonnyDaze,

Your distributors are the same, in fact, they rotate in the same direction.

The starboard side motor is the right hand, or counter rotating one. This is done by eliminating the timing chain and gears, replacing them with two gears that mesh together. This way the cam and distributor rotate the direction they were designed to, and only the crankshaft rotates in the opposite direction.

Be sure to use only marine rated distributors that are 'ignition protected'. This is very important, critical really, as a fuel leak and the resulting vapors could ruin your day in a hurry. I'm not sure if anyone used the 'HEI', or coil-in-cap design for marine use. It seems to me that they all had a separate coil.

I have the same issue 1984 searay sedan 310 bridge twin crusaders. I replaced the whole distributer and breaker pointson the port engine and want to do the same with the starboard engine. If I can acheive electronic ignition without replacing the distributor the better. I live in the UK and older parts for searay are difficult to obtain. Any ideas what type of breaker points to purchase?
cheers

When I rebuilt my 1986 454s 4 years ago I installed DUI (Davis Unified Ignition) distributors. They are self contained with 1 wire hook up. They have mechanical advance and will make the advance curve tailored to you engines and boat specs. Really nice units.

Thanks hot toddie that’s the way I went with the port engine, might have to do the same with the starboard engine

DUI is quality stuff. They have a good rep in the MOPAR world anyway.
