This is the first of my boats that is Coast Guard documented. The requirements mandate that the Official Number on the COD be "....permanently affixed on some clearly visible interior part of the hull...." I would like to know what is generally accepted, and what others in CSR have done. My prior owner seems to have been in violation since the Official Number does not appear anywhere inside the boat.

I have seen many of these markings in the Engine Compartment on boats advertised for sale. Not sure if that meets the USCG requirements but they seem to leave a lot of gray area about where it could be located.

Do a search and you will find discussions about this....even very recent.

Place it on the hull of the boat in view when opening the engine compartment.

use engraved teak or engraved lucite , either glue it or screw it

I have my number engraved on a stainless steel plate that is fixed using epoxy to the side of the boat in the engine compartment. As long it is visible, on a non removable piece of the hull and is the correct height it is approved by USCG.

Thanks to all for responses.

I just had this made by a forum member that frequents different boards. Should be arriving early next week. Can't wait! I think it looks beautiful.

Cincy,
Where do you plan to mount it since I will have to do the same thng? Also, how much would an engraved plate like that cost? That is really a nice looking plate, it will be a shame to hide something that nice in the engine compartment.

Mine is going to be mounted here:

Starboard side. This way it will be easily seen when the hatch is opened even just a bit as opposed to vertically on a stringer. As for cost, I'll point you to the babc.com board where the engraver tends to reside "Frantically Relaxing". I'll let him quote you a price since this is really a private individual but I'll say that his pricing is better than what I've seen out there for comparable wood plaques.

Bill - I ordered a board from these guys: http://www.documentationboards.com/products.htm. It looks great and I paid the $15 for "installation kit"...way over-priced for a tube of epoxy and 2 screws. The board looks great though.

I might be out of compliance but I glued and screwed mine inside my lazarette for easy viewing. It's on a permanent part of the boat, technically, and it would cause noticeable damage if it were removed. I've thought about putting vinyl numbers with a clear coat in the bilge too. The lazarette idea was for quick inspection if I get stopped.

looks good. I will be mounting mine this weekend and after seeing your pic, have decided to mount on horizontal flat surface vs. vertical.

The boat I am buying (survey and sea trial tomorrow) has its' CG documentation placard mounted to the hull in the port engine room.

Mine is a vinyl decal glued to an upright in the bilge. I have had several inspections by the CG and it has always been satisfactory. I like the looks of that plaque though.

I couldn't find an easily reachable spot in my 320 engine compartment so I put the 3" stick-on numbers on the lip of my engine hatch cover and sprayed many coats of Krylon clear coat paint over them. This was a cheap solution so hopefully the USCG will find it satisfactory if I ever get inspected.

I could be wrong but I don't think that meets the regulation. The numbers need to be on a permanent part of the boat that can be easy recognized if removed or tampered with. The hatch cover can easily be removed and replaced.

The engine hatch on my 320 has to weigh several hundred pounds so it is theoretically removable but it would not be easy. Since the language of the regulation is imprecise I'll rely on visibility and 3" lettering to get by.
