Not always and not until after Thanksgiving. This past winter was a little harsh and the bay ( Manhasset Bay ) did freeze solid from shore out 200 yards.

Why last trip on Labor Day? Sep and Oct still offer some great boating in the Mid Atlantic.

An update on my sensor issue I was running this summer and was just about to run through Plum Gut when my starboard engine reset to neutral. The aft water cooler alarm was screaming. After talking to my mechanic , he determined it was a faulty sensor. Easy enough to disconnect and go on my way. I replaced both aft water cooler sensors and a oil pressure sensor as soon as I got to port. Expensive little buggers. About $500 a piece, but worth the peace and quite and piece of mind.
