Dilemma: Downsize to 2 boats? (long winded!)

Lake Travis TX
I have a bit of a dilemma and would be interested in hearing your input.

My wife and I have always wanted a place where we could park the boat right in the back yard. We live in Austin and boat on the (recently refilled) Lake Travis, but waterfront here is ridiculously priced and until recently, most of it wasn't waterfront at all due to the water level.

So we've been looking at waterfront on the texas coast, as its VERY affordable and seemingly hasn't been discovered yet. I wanted to buy something now before it gets "Florida'd".... As of last week, we closed on our new vacation home (and future early retirement home base) on Padre Island near Corpus. It was cheaper for me to buy a 2nd home than sell the one we have near the lake for a decent lake travis waterfront home. Down there, we have 65 feet of bulkhead, a fabulous wide canal view, and are 5 minutes from the ICW. All this for less than the price of a nice new tract home in the Austin suburbs. And Padre Island seashore, with its white sand beaches and blue water, is <10 miles down the ICW.

Here are pics of the back yard! We love it!

So the dilemma is: We now have 65' of dock space, plenty of great beaches and fishing to entertain us, but no boat down there! And our 320, which is a fabulous boat, is not exactly cost effective to move. So the only option I can think of is to get a small center console for down there, and keep a cruiser up here. But I'd really like to keep my boating expenses (loan payment, slip, gas, insurance) the same or less.

So, I'm thinking of selling/trading our '04 320 sundancer for a used 280DA and a new 21-23' center console (Pro-line, Sea Hunt, Sailfish, etc).

Most of our lake boating consists of hanging out with friends (one of whom owns a 500DA) and overnighting with them. But its usually just the two of us as our boating friends all have boats. So a 280DA would suffice. Plus, a 12' wide slip on lake travis is ~$200/month less than a 14' wide. Not to mention gas, insurance, payments, etc.

Essentially, we could trade the 320DA for a used 280DA and a new $30-35K center console, even up, but still save $300-400/month in slip, fuel etc. And a 280DA could be trailered occasionally down to the coast if we end up spending a month or two at a time there.

I know I'd miss the size, but we'll be saving up for that yacht in a few years (ok, more like 5yrs). Probably a 45ish Searay or possibly a used Azimut or the like. We'll have a lot more time to use it then anyways.

So am I crazy? Should I downsize to two boats and pocket the monthly savings? It would give us a boat to enjoy on the coast.

Thanks....

Honestly Dave, it sounds like you have this all pretty well thought out. You have a plan for now while also having a plan for the future. I would guess most are going to say you have to do what is right for you. Nice backyard by the way...

You will have to make your own choices but if it was me I would want a" big water" boat in Corpus. Your 320 seems better suited to that and it would probably be more cost effective to pay to have it moved. With the ICW and the ocean to cruise in, something larger than a 320 might be even more desirable. Then of course, if you moved the 320 you would have to decide what to get for Travis.

Good luck with your decision. BTW, the view is just great on the Corpus property.

If it were me, I'd:
1) Keep the 32, and buy a used Whaler for the coast,
-OR-
2) move the 32, and use the Whaler on the lake.

You said around 5 years. The 32 will be worth allot more then than an aready used 28, and if you buy the Whaler right, you'll get most of it back when you sell her in 5 years.
Whalers, more than most boats under 20', just seem to hold their value.
By the way, the scenery is beautiful.

While the 320 might be costly to move, it's got to be cheaper than a new boat. You have v drives so there is no maintenance issues on B3 drives and salt water. You gave yourself a tough decision. Nice problem to have. Best of luck with it.

adopt me and we can put my new 240DA in your backyard

I dont really have any good answer but I envy you, that is a pretty scenery you have and it is definitely awesome to have your own dock. Congrats! and I am sure you will make the right decisions.

Thanks for the input folks. Keeping the 320DA is an option, but it means holding off on a boat for down there. Moving the 320DA isn't an option for a variety of reasons.....

We're not going to be overnighting there like we do on the lake. We will be using it to go to fishing, cruise the ICW to restaurants & beaches (where we'll need a shallow draft), and down to some of the other ports along the area. So we need a fast boat that can be beached and won't drain the bank if we go 50 miles in a day.

At some point, when we spend a few months down there as opposed to weekends, we'll take long relaxing cruises on a big cruiser. But thats 5+ years away.

The other issue is that I don't really want to buy another boat without a reduction in boating expense to offset it.

It would probably cost $1200-1500 to haul the 320 down there. But we have lots of friends on Lake Travis and don't want to give up on spending time with them, so we need an overnightable boat on lake travis.

So, an example of a deal I'd thinking of would be trading the 320DA for a used 280DA and a Seahunt Triton 220 center console. The combination would cost the same, but would save me $300/month in slip, insurance, and fuel AND give me a cruiser for the lake and an ideal boat for the coast (for now).

Thanks for the comments guys.... I just need to think this through before I start making inquiries.

delliott00- All I have to say after the last 72hours is I wish I had your problem/dilema. Personally I would also relocate the big rig (but I don' t know the area enough to know what are your options- here, it's many times more options once your in the saltwater) and get a smaller 240 or Boat like mine 23OV(although I know the downsizing will change your style  of boating) to curise/overnight on the lake.

How long does it take to get to the coast dfrom Lake Travis?

Well, you can't boat from Lake Travis to the Coast. Unless you get really good running start, in which case you might be able to jump the dams along the way :)

But from my house, its about 3:15 or so. Its all freeway, 70mph, not a single stop until you get to the island.

We'll definitely get a yacht someday for down there. Thats why I wanted to get a house now with a good sized dock (65 feet will do!). The wife wants an Azimut or Viking yacht, so its probably going to be 5 or more years and be a 10yr old boat then :)

But anyways, we need a cruiser for the lake and, for now at least, a fast economical boat for fishing and beach hopping down there. An outboard powered center console will get 3-4mpg, so a 30 mile run down the coast at 30mph to hit some of the secluded beaches is no big deal.

And for those folks who have asked, you can get a canal front home down there for about $300K on up to $500-700K for a very high end home with lots of water. Our house needs some freshening (very nicely maintained, but hadn't been changed since the 80s) that we're going to spend a little DIY equity on, but the end result will be paradise for <$350K!

Thanks!

Congrats...you've got the best of both worlds; the best fresh water lake & best TX coastline to play on. I like your proposal....I do question your time to the coast from AUS...you must know a shortcut. Let me be the 1st to accept your invitation to go bay fishing.

BTW....Devil's Cove is at 666'.....how appropriate

See your thinking like I would. I think downsizing and going with the 280DA is a great idea especially since it's only the 2 of you. I have a Sea Hunt right now and it's a great boat that will keep you dry. First things first the house on the water, then upgrade back in 5 or so years and whammmm you have paradise in both worlds. Good luck on making a decision boat decision are always tough ones.
