Digital TV Converter/Glomax

Recent LCDs will have the built-in digital tuner (HD TV). But you never know how long a particular TV was in the manufacturing pipeline. If its got HDMI inputs its almost certain to be digital tuning. Digital channels are often a separate search and program set-up versus analog. So if you've got an HDTV LCD but you're not receiving the digital channels, check your set-up menu.

The flying saucer atop the arch (Glomex, SeaWatch, etc.) is the UHF/VHF antenna. Its poor gain because it has to be omnidirectional. This requires an amplfier but still produces poor analog reception.

At one end of the antenna amplifier gain control rotation is a click stop which switches from the ship antenna to the transom shore inlet. You might check its position if you're getting no signal.

There's no need to change antennas. Basically the old analog and new digital operate with different languages but on a similar bandwidth. Digital reception will be improved.

If your accessing RF distribution at the Glomex then you're not getting as good a picture as you will with line level connectivity (ie HDMI, component, S-video or composite). You might use the RF modulation function for wholeboat distribution (before the splitter) and also use line level into a larger salon TV. This way one tuner will facilitate all TVs and you get a better picture where it matters most.

If you want to totally conceal the tuner within a cabinet or behind a TV then consider an infrared repeater like a Xantech 29110RP kit.

Here's an example,

Hope this helps.

I installed the Artech digital receiver and a infrared repeater so I could completely hide the receiver and am pleased with the digital reception. At the dock I am plugged in to a large round omni directional antenna with power amplifier and receive about 15 channels and at sea I was surprised to get 13 channels with rabbit ears plugged into the cable jack on the exterior side of the boat. Since I do not have a radar arch I just plug in the antenna when ever there is a desire to watch TV. I seen advertised a digital antenna that looks like a cucumber with the bottom cut off, does anyone know the manufacturer?

Velooce,

All UHF/VHF antennas will work but you need omnidirectional and electronic (amplified) for a boat.

Not having an arch is not a problem because you can conceal the antenna within a cockpit seat console, under a sink or in a locker. If there's room you could even use the transom locker. Just keep it above the sole. Fiberglass will not impede the signal enough to be a consideration. Use a 1-inch diameter deck/arch mount stanchion or 1-inch O.D. PVC and flange for mounting.

The SeaWatch 2025 is ideal. Here's some info:

Thanks thats encourging that I can hide the antenna and it will shoot thur fiberglass. The Sea Watch 2025 is to large, this is what I am using that is fixed to the boat house roof. I have an area that the radio shack small antenna will fit?

If one already has only flat panel tv's installed, what good does this converter do with obtaining signal input to these tv's? :smt100

If you already have a digital television, which most flat screens would be, you do not need a converter box. The converter takes the digital signal and converts it to analog for older TVs to process.

Does anyone know if my 2001 Glomax will receive the digital signal. I am in the process of installing a converter - and uncertain if I need to upagrade the Glomax??
Thanks

I would think your 2001 glomax would be fine as my circa 1997 glomax picks up all the digital channels in the area just fine.. Clear TV from the digital conversion is a plus!!!

Sounds about right, except for the power light. That should definately light up. May have a blown fuse or wiring issue in there.

The antennas don't work well inside a busy marina. Too much interferance from all the big boats, blow boat masts, etc. Figure out the power problem and try it out away from your slip in a clear area.

Mine doesn't pick up analog signals well at all in the marina. But digital is an either/or type situation. So you either get a great picture or nothing.

New SeaRay owner. My 2001 280 Sundance has the same problem, no power light on glomax. Where might the fuse be to see if it needs replacing?

Thanks

I just did this on my 05 340 a month ago. I bought the unit at Radio Shack (they only had one model) and used velcro strips to attach it to the top of the cabinet where the small pull out TV is. It just fits and still allows the TV to be pulled out, although we never use that one. The only real work involves removing that TV and its bracket from the cabinet. If you need any more details, let me know.

Assuming that you have the same Glomex AMP I have, there is an inline fuse a few inches from the AMP on the Positive wire. You will, of course, need to remove the AMP module to access it which is a pain. If it turns out the AMP is bad, email Glomex Customer Service as these products are supposed to have a Lifetime Warranty. The serial number is on the back of the AMP. The whole module is about the size of a Home Light Dimmer Switch when removed.
