Digital Camera recommendations

I am in the Nikon camp as well. After reviewing the options I had from the Marriott gift catalog, I chose the D90 over the D5000 and ordered it two days ago. Thanks for the lens info. It will be interesting to see which of my old lenses still work.

Don

The D90 is a great choice. The D5000 and the D90 use the same exact image processor but the D90 has more pro-oriented controls.

Here's a question that's semi-related to this topic, What do you do for insurance coverage in the case where the camera does fall in the water? Homeowners? I don't think that's part of the boating insurance coverage that I've ever seen. A separate policy on the camera?

Most insurance policies will have a rather low MAXIMUM for photography equipment.

I carry a seperate policy on my gear. It costs about $45 for $4000 or so in coverage. My "day bag" generally does have about $3500 of gear inside (those dang lenses do get expensive!). I wouldn't bother for a single body/lens combination.

We have only lost one P&S ($350) to davy jones's locker.

BTW: That $800 for that T1i combo is really sweet!

Yeah, I saw that, almost makes me want to change my mind from my Canon 50D I'm looking at. But I put the 2 in my hands at Best Buy the other night, and the 50d just feels more comfortable and less confined for my hands than the t1i.
I'm looking at the 28-135 is usm and 70-300 is usm lenses as my pkg to get the $200 off. (also available at the major camera shops)

I agree with you. I have the 30D and anytime I hold onto the smaller Rebel line cameras, they just aren't comfortable in my hands. If you're looking for a deal on a D series camera, look to the 40D or even the 30D. Do a comparison and you may find one of the older ones may suit your needs just fine.

I have had very good luck in buying second hand Nikon bodies and lenses. I follow a couple of guys that upgrade every year or 2 and never register their warranties. They can sell easily because you get the factory warranty on a like new camera at a fraction of the price. I am sure if you look around you can find some pros or semi pros in your area that shoot Canons and do this. With Canon and Nikon you very rarely have a warranty issue and if you do you can use it....I have in the past with no problems.

I agree used is a good option as well. Both the 40D and 30D can still be bought new as well for quite a substantial discount compared to the 50D.

We picked up a slightly used Canon 40D. Have only taken a few shots so far but it looks to do the job we wanted it for. Here is a picture from down near our rivercamp. It was a very cloudy day but the sun broke through small spot and shined on this house across the river. This house is at least 1.5 miles away.

Good choice! Look up how to shoot a focusing test and see how it performs. When the 40D was originally released there were many people who complained about soft pictures because of a focusing issue that had to be sent into Cannon for repair.

Just got a Canon 7D with an 18-200 MM f/3.5-5.6 lens. So far I really like it- I've taken maybe 10 photos with it as I'm still going through the instruction manual.

I "had" a 30D previously until my entire bag was stolen. Thankfully, it was all insured. I added a few hundred of my own money to my claim to upgrade to the 7D. The insurance company handled the replacement with Canon- and shipped it to my door.

Just curious. . .what lens did you use?

Sounds like you made out alright! Let us know how that camera works out for you.

will do! I let is autofocus on that shot and it was on the full auto mode. I didn't have me reading glasses with me so I didn't try to adjust the viewfielder lens.

it came as a kit camera. Canon EF 28-135 IS USM lens. I'm still learning here so I hope that is the right description.

Well. . . you described it well enough that I know what lens you are talking about!!

I am a big fan of this lens. As far as image stabilized lenses go. . .this one is "old school"; 1st genereration stuff from the days of film. Still. . when purchased in a kit, it is quite a bargain. Not so long ago, this lens used to sell (at the cheap places) for about $400.

When I got my 40D, I also got this lens as part of the "kit". It serves as the Admiral's primary lens. It is very similar in build and quality to the 17-85/IS EFS lens that came out for digital SLR's at a much higher price (mid $600's).

Ok. . .back to the boating threads!!
