Diesel Survey - Michigan - Advice Please

Hello,

I'm working on purchasing a new to me boat, this time with Diesel power.

The boat is in Harrison Township, Michigan.

Having Cummins come out to do the survey is one option, but I thought I'd see if anyone had other advice?

I know sometimes an independent know it better than the manufacture.

All advice is appreciated!

IMO, a mechanic would know much more than a surveryor since they have had to deal with issue and know where to look for problems, issues that they have dealt with. Now getting a mechanic to do a survey like that may not be easy or even possible.

I had Bridgeway Cummins do the mechanical inspection and sea trial. They are in Mt. Clemens, MI. In those days it was Ernie Zini and I gained a lot of knowledge from that exercise.

Beardsley Marine of Harsen's Island deals with most of the diesel manufacturers and are great to deal with. You could give them a try instead.

Please note that this is not a boat or hull survey. That is looked after in an earlier stage of the process. I used Dennis Biel of Harrison Twp. for this and felt he did a good job as well. His number is 586-463-5526.

I agree with having a good diesel mechanic from the Cummins shop to the survey on the engines and trannies. I had a guy from the Cat dealer in that same area do the surveys on mine. He'd worked on the engines for several years prior to when I was buying it so he was very familiar with the boat. His comment was that the prior owner had maintained it with an open checkbook.

He already knew what to expect of the engines and there were no surprises.

That confirms my approach. I had planned to have Dennis do the survey and Cummins do the mechanical.

I always like to ask the question incase someone here knows of a better local mechanic.
