Diesel Repower of an Old Gasser

Exactly right...way over the top, however, I get hung up on the how to's in physically getting a job like that done. I figure that is wasn't that hard to do if the section was aft of the shaft logs......just cut the transom off, scoot it back and build hull and sides for the gap.

Why your spend that kind of money on an older boat like that one....2 or 3 model generations past current......is still a mystery.

Wrong...........its more like $25K for each engine/transmission.

Then there are gauges, shafts, props, shaft seals, new fuel system to provide for fuel returns, added primary fuel filtration, new generator, new battery banks and switch gear, and the list goes on........plus you have to pay someone to do the work unless you are real handy. I forgot haul out at $8-$10/ft. and lay days in a boat yard at $1.50-$1.75/ft. per day.

Also, the price I got was about $75K for repowering a 390EC, not $100K.

315's are about 50K for a pair with gear, panels, harnesses, mounts.
These are mechanical engines so all the old control cables will usually work after changing the ends. The 315 uses a gear reduction starter and can be supplied by the same battery bank as a BBC. Shafts for a 315 and a BBC are often of comparable size and could be reused. It will require reproping. Adding the fuel return can be a challenge running the hose and labor intensive. A good Racor is about $200. Add 50ft of hose for another $300 and I'd guess $1000 in labor.
To maintain the OE instruments will require some adaptation and the tach would have to be changed. <$1000.00
Shaft seals, are about $500 a pair for the PSS. and <$50 if you have packing.

All told, 75K is a good turn key number, If you were counting pennies and doing some of the work you could come out less expensive in the end.

Is it worth it, that's a personal decision. For me it will be in my 340. I won't be able to find a 2 cabin express with diesels in nearly new condition for 75K.

Figure a 15k budget for a turn key diesel gen replacement.
