COURT SHIP: I thought some of you might be interested in the following reply to me from my fellow member of Dundalk Sail & Power Squadron (DSPS) located here in Baltimore, MD. I sent the general membership the CAT bulletin I posted here yesterday, and this is a reply by a DSPS member with the added link. So, it appears that the Rotella T API CF 2 oil is O.K. in the CAT 3116 engine. Any one disagree? If so, why?

POWER SQUADRON MEMBER: "According to Shell the oil has not changed. However API has obsoleted the CF-4 designation so Shell is no longer permitted to label the oil with CF-4. So if the oil is working ok for you now it is still ok to use. I have similar issues with my Detroit's. Delo 400 used to be the correct oil. Then they reformulated for emissions and Delo 100 was the correct oil. Now Chevron has stopped the Delo 100 production and I will have to switch oils again".

http://www.api.org/certifiCATions/engineOIL/CATegories/upload/2009_ENGINE_OIL_GUIDE.pdf

"In order to receive a designation such as CF-2, CF-4, CG-4, etc. each oil has to be tested and even subjected to a test in a running engine to see that it meets the specifications. API charges a testing/license fee for each grade of oil. When there aren't enough manufactures willing to pay for the testing they obsolete the category. On the chart designation CA is obsolete and the caution is "Not suitable for use in engines built after 1959"!"

COURT SHIP: I found the info in the above link rather informative and assume it is current. Then again, the info I post yesterday from the CAT bulletin was, I believe, dated Jan 2009.

Comments appreciated.

After reading the articles on this forum regarding oil specifications especially Shell Rotella T1 in 30 or 40 weight, I decided to call Shell. After talking to the technical support in the Canadian HQ, I was informed that Rotella T1 has actually changed in specification (CF-2) and Shell has reduced the Zinc content that is not required by newer engines but critical for older engines. This loss of Zinc increases the wear peformance of the oil.

My next call was to Catapillar in Peterborough, ON who offer tech support for Cat marine in my area. They agreed that you need to have oil at least certified to CF-4 which is now CG-4. The CAT brand name 30 or 40 weight oil meet this spec but it is pricey. I was also told that the straight weight oil theory is old and the new Rotella T3 meet CF-4 standards and can be used. They use it everyday in thier truck engines. More to come as I dig deeper.

I have Rotella T1 in my Cat 3116's when I changed the oil in September and now it looks like I will be changing it again in the spring.

I wonder if there is an additive that will increase the zinc content to acceptable levels. I also winder if one crankcase full and one season would really do any damage. I just changed the oil in my 3126's with Rotella T1 last month so now I have all winter to worry about the freaking engines and the oil I changed..

damn it...I hate boats!
