Devastated - can this hole be fixed?

“Friendtold me it was a steal and even tho winterized the engine looked good. Told me everything looked good and pressured me to buy it ”

Sorry to break this to you, but I’d find a new friend!
That's the answer. He was NOT your friend. He was a moron. Make him take the boat and give you your money back.

It's an old boat. Needing much $ to fix it is a given, even without the hole. First time boaters for sure, but having a "friend" guide you makes it even worse.

Dump it. Take your losses. You are in for a money pit, the likes of which you can't imagine.

I understand your buyer's remorse with this, but it may not be as bad a you think. YouTube is your friend here and you can get a wealth of information on boats there.

You don't have a tow vehicle - I don't either, but I rent a U Haul Pickup truck for 35/day to tow from home to the marina launch. Not worth buying a truck to do that.

The engine has hoses off and the bilge is dirty/oily - hoses are probably off from the last winterization (easy to put back together) and the bilge can be cleaned with Simple Green and a rinse (make sure the drain plug is out first). Check engine oil level, get a battery and possibly some starter fluid and give her a try! Remember not to start it without water supply via muffs on the drive (it is an alpha - water pump in the drive itself) or you'll burn out the water pump.

Hole in the bottom - I still do not believe that it looks unintentional. It's too uniform in shape and the hole itself doesn't point forward, but instead faces the stb side of the boat? Did you find out where the toilet gets its water from (follow the water supply hose)? Is the black area hard or mushy?

Do try and stay positive and take it as a personal challenge to learn new things and you might find that it is not nearly as bleak as it seems! We're here to help too!!

"New Boater" is the key here. Buy a 14' Tinny with a 10HP outboard and take the family out and have memories beyond compare, and you will be a boater for life. As you learn the ropes and become knowledgeable, you will move up in size and cost and the memories will increase tenfold.

Or, start out with a relatively biggun, that is a POS, and needs massive repairs and maintenance, and is **** to begin with, and the whole event will sour you for life.

You are being overly optimistic. Did you see the dry rotted stringer. It's not unreasonable to say that the dry rot was not limited to one stringer in one area. Since that string was higher up it a safe assumption the stringers in the lower portion of the V were immersed in water as well and are just as dry rotted.

That boat is totaled. It can be salvaged with tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of labor. Unless its a passion, it's not worth the effort.
