So I am looking at a 53" trawler with DD 6V92T. I know these are V-6 engines 2-stroke, 92 CID per cylinder with Turbos and with the ability to resleeve the cylindars if needed.

What are the good, bad and ugly about these engines?

One thing I heard about 2-strokes is that they are very noisy.

My boat came with Detroits or Cats. Before I bought it I didn't know the difference so started asking questions. The SR guy told me the cats were a $58,000 upgrade from the Detroits, and that was in 1995.

He said the Detroits were (1) noisier, (2) smoked quite a bit more than the Cats, (3) broke more frequently, but (4) were much cheaper to fix because you can get parts for them anywhere and there are tons of broken Detroits around to scrounge parts from.

The Cats, according to this guy are (1) quieter, (2) smoke only at startup, (3) last forever if you keep the oil level up and the oil clean and burn clean fuel, but (4) when they break, get out your checkbook because they're expensive to repair.

Generally that same info was confirmed by the broker I used, Cat and Detroit mechanics I checked with, and others I've talked to.

That being said, I have the Cats in my boat and I will confirm they're quiet, smooth running and only smoke at startup.

Detroits only smoke at start up. Once warm, no problem. They can suck some fuel, but in a trawler, it's really a non issue. A properly insulated ER will help abate noise, as will isolation mounts.

My Dad has a pair of them in his 43 Open. I can confirm that they are very loud at idle out of the marina. They seem to quiet down alot once on plane at cruising speed. The engines have about 1500 hours on them. Mostly from two great loop adventures. They like to run at about 90% wot (not sure how they perform at trawler RPM's). He's had the boat since 1995 and the detroits have been very reliable with only a couple big repairs in almost 20 years.

In my research I have found parts for cummins and cats are cheap compared to Volvos....I am staying away from volvo at this point based on watching a friend of mine.
