To continue the “Points of Interest†thread started by boltman, thought I would share some of this past summer’s adventures/destinations. While our seasonal slip is in Frankfort, we have been spending the Spring and Fall in the Traverse Bay area.

Destination Boyne City, Michigan, Memorial Day Weekend.

Leaving Traverse City we headed to Boyne City for a long Memorial Day weekend. Boyne City is at the southeast end of Lake Charlevoix. We headed out Friday morning around 9:30 am, were waiting for the fog to lift at least a bit. The bay (Grand Traverse) was calm with patchy fog. Once we reach the big lake (Michigan) the fog had lifted and sun was shining.

From Lake Michigan you enter the channel that connects to Round Lake (City of Charlevoix). There is a Bascule Bridge that opens on the half hour, with our radio antenna and masthead light down we can clear the bridge. Once inside Round Lake there is another short channel to Lake Charlevoix. It is a nice cruise around Round Lake, lots of nice houses and “big†boats to see.

Lake Charlevoix is about 13 miles long and a nice ride down to Boyne City. There are two marinas available, the City Municipal and Harborage Marina, we stayed at the Harborage Marina where we had not been since 1998, it was nice to get back. Not a lot had changed at either the marina or town.

The marina has nice slips available with floating docks. We were lucky and got a slip on the grass peninsula so had a nice area ashore adjacent to the boat. The bathhouse is roomy and has separate rooms each with a commode, sink and shower. The entire building is air conditioned and well lighted. The office has sitting area, coffee, cable TV access (weather channel) and an on-site weather station. Since the slips are privately owned there is usually no cable tv available at the transient slips (not an issue for us). Around the marina grounds there was plenty of room to exercise/play with our four legged family member, Waldo. The Harborage Marina has gas, diesel and pump-out. There were usually three to four docks hands around that were all very polite, helpful and willing to assist when asked.

Town is a short walk from either the Harborage Marina or City Municipal Marina which is next door. There are several good restaurants in town, some with nice views of the lake and sunsets (One Waterstreet for example). Actually, we love to walk and this boat town is great for walking – either along the lakeshore or up into the quite little residential area.

The weather was great the whole time we were there (about 5 days), sunny skies and warm days. We were out on the water just about every day cruising and exploring Lake Charlevoix. One day we took the south arm down to East Jordan, nice easy cruise, a lot of no wake but we were in no hurry. Another day we cruised out to Lake Michigan and then north up to Little Traverse Bay – Petoskey, Bay Harbor and Harbor Springs. Again, this was a great day trip and the water was perfect. Still being fairly early in the year we did not see a lot of boats either out on the lake (Michigan or Charlevoix) or in the marinas.

This trip was the first [major] cruise for Waldo and he did pretty well. We think he figured out quick that this is not such a bad life.

Great Trip

Great Trip Salty Dog, We did that trip, but only from Elk Rapids this year. As a matter of Fact, My wife just told me that we were parked right behind you in Manistee this summer, and we ate at the 440 restaurant. I knew I'd seen your Boat somewhere, It's a beautiful boat, I envy you. We heard your Dog barking up a storm while you were away from your Boat.

Well I will try to post pics of our trip we took this summer, and We're looking forward to Docking up with you this summer.

Robert,

Now that you mention it I do remember your boat behind us on the wall in Manistee. That was in June right? We must have just finished lunch at the 440 when you we getting seated.

Sorry about Waldo barking, he is a lot better now. 2006 was his first boating season and he had a lot to get used to.

Thanks for the compliment on the boat, we love her - yours is pretty darn nice looking as well!

Going to post about some of our other trips next, looking forward to sharing.

We will keep and eye out for ya next summer.

Salty Dog- Really enjoyed reading of your experiences in Lake Charlevoix. We had cruised to Door County WI. last summer and stopped in Charlevoix on our way back. We had another couple with us on their 41SR and we loved the area so much we are planning next year to spend a whole trip just in the Lake Charlevoix area. We put our names on the waiting list for the Muni-marina @Charlevoix and proceded out of Round Lake and into Lake Charlevoix. We found very pleasant docking at NorthWest Marine Yacht Club. We then took our dingy all around the Lake to explore. We went to Ironton to have lunch and watched the auto ferry run on it's "cables". We also had fun exploring Oyster Bay and just hanging out there and enjoyed seeing the large "cottages" that line the shoreline. We did not get down to the bottom of the lake and stay where you did-that's why we want to go back. Oh Well-Next year! The following day we found out that we did get in to the downtown marina so we moved the boats there and had a great time people and boat watching! We want to run the big boat down to Boyne City and stay where you did. Is it hard to get reservations? Are they usually sold out?

Petep, thanks for the feedback.

Getting into the Harborage is not to tough, give them a call a couple of weeks before you want to be there and they can take care of ya.

We love Door County, kept a boat there for about 4.5 years. I'm thinking about posting our adventure from there last summer - three weeks!

Hey Salty Dog (Paul)-

It's Jeff. We met at Harbor West in Traverse City last spring. I've been enjoying reading about your cruises. Our summer was very busy, so we only took one weeklong cruise to Charleviox and a few trips to Elk Rapids, Northport and Sutton's Bay. We normally go as far Drummond Island in a summer, but not this year. We were going to go to Beaver Island, but each planned weekend, it was very windy. Seemed overall like it was windier than normal last summer.

Some of us Great Lakes CSR guys should try to hook up for a weekend next summer in Elk Rapids, Boyne City, Charlevoix, Bay Harbor etc.

Where are you storing Salty Dog this winter? Miss T's tucked away in a heated buildng at Northport Bay Boatyard.

Anyway, we love Charlevoix. Below is a moonlight picture of Round Lake taken from my boat at the municipal marina, my favorite shot of the bridge (from 2005) and Miss T in Elk Rapids.

Enjoy and reminisce about warmer days!

Hey Tc410

Ahh the best Port I have ever Been to Elk Rapids, Hey Tc410 are you slipped at Elk Rapids, Might has seen you there this summer, we were all over Elk Rapids. We trailer our 320 and went there 4 times, we also ran into Salty Dog, parked behind him in Manistee before I had talked with him online here at this site.

Your idea of a hook up on lake Michigan sounds Great, elk Rapids sounds like a great place to do it at too. We're in if anyone else would like to come, lets get a group together..........

Hey Jeff, Yes I remember you.

Sorry to hear you had such a busy summer, we did as well only it was on the boat :smt001 We are on the hard there in Traverse City.

I do agree it seemed a bit windy at times this year. We never did make Beaver Island, maybe next summer.

I think setting up a gathering would be a great idea for next summer. Love your photos - those are great - especially the bridge. Looks like you are heading west so that is sunrise eh!

Working on another destination, will post it soon. Just posted Sturgeon Bay.

Let's Plan it and Do it!!!!!

OK guys, well we've all talked about it, suggested it and now it's time to Plan it. As you all know I trailer Our 320 so the Rendevous place is open for suggestion. I really like Elk Rapids, though its a liltte bit of a trip for Salty Dog. So wherever anyone decides, We can trialer there and go from that starting point, I'd even like to stay in Frankfort, that would be very nice.

So that said, Tc410, Salty Dog, and anyone else let's decide on a Port and plan it, I am very flexible as to where that would be, just trying to save people on the gas/diesel bill.

Anyone else, let's hear from you also........
