Delta Mariner takes out Eggner's Ferry bridge in western KY

Dang... luckily no one was hurt... So who's fault would it be? The bridge was not properly lit... or is it still the captians even with lack of navigation?

the lighting was due for maintainence today
but the bridge was reported to be properly lit in the direction the ship was traveling.

appearantly staying in the channel requires MORE THAN rocket science

A quote from the above referenced link:

"Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard told the News Edge that the Delta Mariner was apparently attempted to go under the recreational channel under the Eggner's Ferry Bridge, rather than the navigational channel, when it struck the bridge Thursday night. Here the full comments..."

Re: Ship takes out Kentucky Bridge!

They'll need to use the bow thruster to dock that boat. :wow:

Karen, Would you like to tell about that oops or is that a secret ??.

After the Concordia sunk, I heard an interview to an old captain. He said that today’s instruments give lots of info and data… but you really need 10% of that, the rest is your skill and experience… I guess he’s right!

That was one of the early reports. I've looked at numerous other articles and watched news reports and it was mentioned there.

As you can see from this picture he was in the first section with the rounded truss. I think he was supposed to be at the other end. But doesn't look like much difference in height though. I'm not sure he would have cleared the other side without antenna damage at least.

This picture taken previously shows him the in what would be the far end in the picture above. note the steepness of the bridge approach.

Well, it looks like this captain just moved the schedule up a bit.

http://www.explorekentuckylake.com/projects/us68project.htm

Project Overview
US 68/KY 80 is the only east-west gateway into the Land Between the Lakes. The highway also serves as the primary east-west connector for Murray and Cadiz. The project calls for the four-lane reconstruction of the route from Mayfield, Ky. through the Land Between the Lakes to Cadiz. As of January 2011, most of the project is now complete.

Kentucky Highway 80 is now complete from Mayfield to Murray to Aurora. At Aurora, US 68 joins Kentucky 80 at Kentucky Lake. The 80 year-old Eggner's Ferry Bridge, which carries US 68/KY 80 across Kentucky Lake, still remains and is waiting to be replaced by a new, modern four-lane bridge.

In November 2010 the new four-lane US 68/KY 80 opened between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in the Land Between The Lakes. The highway bottlenecks one more at the equally antiquated Henry Lawrence Bridge across Lake Barkley. From there, the road is two-lanes to Cadiz with plans to widen it to four later this decade.

The bridges spanning Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley have been labeled as "Functionally Obsolete" by transportation officials. The bridges are nearly 80 years of age (built in 1932) and will be over that mark when the new bridges are completed. Continuing budget constraints have put the new bridges in jeopardy but as of now construction will start on Kentucky Lake's new bridge in 2012 and Barkley's is 2011. The bridges will take about two years to complete.

Looking at your second picture, it looks like he is going under the first rounded truss span - and cleared it on that occasion...

Yet he hit it on the last trip through.

I think the first photo is looking east and the second photo is looking west. Notice the large hills in the photo looking west. So those are different areas of the bridge.
