First off Hello to all of you fantastic boat owners!

Introduction:
First off my name is Chris, I live in Odessa, FL which is in the northwest corner of Hillsborough County just outside Tampa. I'm about 5 miles to Tampa Bay. I bought my 2006 Sun Deck 240 from Marine Maxx at the end of October 2006. It was rather interesting. I was not shopping for a boat I was actually shopping at Costco in clearwater with my wife, dad and stepmom and Marine Max had boats on display outside. So my dad and I went over just to look (toys are nice to look at) we had a boat as a kid like a 16' I think my dad said I don't remember the specs on it only that it was ugly and green but it got us around and fished out of it.

Needless to say I looked at a 220 SD and was like wow this is way cool. Like I said I wasn't there to buy but then you know the wheels start going it would be nice to have a boat but what would I want but this 220 SD looks real nice then I look at the price wow that's alot off the MSRP so I talk to a sales guy and ask what the deal was he was really nice and very informative and helpful specially since I really knew nothing (well maybe a little).

Fast forward a bit a couple of days past and after talking to the wife about if we can afford it we go to the show room and get over whelmed but we stick to our guns since I already knew Sea Ray was a good boat we looked that those. We decided on the 240 for the extra room over the 220. Fast Forward some more past the financing drama (that's for another thread) we take delivery of the boat and trailer.

Reason for this thread:
Now I don't know about other dealers but I can tell you this Clearwater Marine Max has made buying a boat the nicest experience I've every gone through (better then buying a car). They provided me with a first ride and orientation of my boat and show/taught me everything I should need to know. I've gone to their charting class as well. They also provided us all kinds of required things: Dock Lines, Fenders, Flares, life preservers, etc... all the stuff required by the Coast Guard and then some. Also the sales man (obviously made some money) as they also give you credit at their store (which I've found is cheaper then West Marine)

Basically this thread is for us New 240 owners you've got their boat but are not sure what else they will need. I said for 240 owners as every boat is different and it also will probably depend on your location.

Wants and Needs:
Obviously there will be things you want and there will be things you need. I want to focus on things you need or atleast I think you need and all you experts or even newbies can talk about what you think you need.

Needs:
So far this is what I have
All the coast guard required things, flares, whistle, throwable cushion, fire extiguisher, life jackets.

Fenders, crab hook, anchor, dock lines, quick guide for reading markes and such. (all of this MM gave us well I 'm sure we paid for it :) but they would like you to think they gave it to you)

So far I've bought, battery charger, jumper box which also has a air pump. New dock lines (the free ones were BLAH), better crab hook, all kinds of cleaning supplies Serious Shine products for keeping the boat clean and CRC ??? to coat the engine, engine clean out water thing (what do you call that thing), wrench for the plug, first aid kit, wheel chocks for trailer, tow ball and locks for it and the trailer, hand held VHF radio.

The other day I started thinking about things I might need and started making a list.

A replacment fuse for every fuse on the boat never know when you might need one.
Replacment light bulbs for all the bulbs on the boat.
Second anchor
Spare tire for trailer (maybe even two)
Paddles (never know)
manual bildge pump or pump I can use off the jumper battery thing
Tool Kit
Knife
Change of Cloths

That covers it for now, but I'm sure there is more I'm not thinking of.

I'm not looking for things I'd like to have like GPS but things you better not leave home with out like a MAP of the area you will be boating in especially if your not familar with it. Things you would keep on the boat at all times not thing you would take on an off either.

Sorry it's a long post but I think it will help me and any other newbie out there like me.

First.. welcome to the board!

Sounds like you've got a great start on it!

Ahhhhh yea good add, the fancy toliet paper and the green stuff for the toliet I forgot to mention that but yea I got some of that. Marine Max keeps giving me money to their store think I've received 4 different $25 certificates from them so that was one of the things I bought.

The only thing is there is not a Pump out where we put in at and not one close by like a 30-45 min drive to one so we've been avoiding breaking in the head so far but it's nice to know it there in case you really gotta go :)

I guess favorite beverage could be a NEED and not a want :) or the need is BEVERAGES and the want is YOUR FAVORITE haha

Thanks for replying though

heh

The head issue has been discussed quite a bit... or maybe that was on the old CSR board. But a good number don't use a pump out .. capped off the lines and just pull it after the weekend, rinse and clean it out, put it back in.. 5 minutes tops.. and when I get ready to move up I'll buy a brand new porta potty and can advertise as never been used.

umm.. lessee.. to stay on topic... absolutely bevarage is a need! One could get severely dehydrated in that summer sun!

Congrats. on the new boat! The only thing I could recomend would be sun screen. Other than that it looks like you have most of the "to keep on board" items covered. :smt001

sounds like it's time to go out and have some fun!!!

Ahh yes, good deal  Specially down here in Florida LOTS of sunscreen.

Right now actually with all the forest fires you need a mask cause of the smoke about 1 mile visibility right now and ash all over everything.

But I guess yes I'd rather be putting the boat in the water then sitting here at work but I don't think my boss would appreciate if I just left :)

You need a bigger wallet too so you can start saving for your next bigger boat next year. :wow:

Either that or you need to find a solution to the bad case of ITIS that you have. :smt043

all kidding aside, enjoy your new 240SD.........they are fantastic boats. I miss mine! :smt089

Hmmph, Seems as though you have the same problem I do... It will be the admirals first time out this year, and I can't wait to get out of here to go :smt009

Yea my wallet hurts specially the first time I had to put gas in it (MM was nice enough to give us our first tank).

ITIS ok for the life of me I can't figure out what you mean but I'm sure it's funny. And are you telling me I have to wait a whole year before I upgrade?

Funny that you mention that though, last time we went to Marine Max to use one of them free $25 things they gave us we looked at larger boats cruisers with sleeping quarters and a grill etc. and well yea I can see an upgrade coming but I need to decide if I like the sportyness of the sundeck which I liked cause I felt we would pull people sking or tubing on some lakes around here but the more I think about it I'd like to be able to spend the night at some deserted island like yesterday I got this magzine called Capt JAck and it had photos and info about a fort in the dry tortugas that was 60 miles from any marina and had no food or water there and dang how I want to go check that out now.

ahhh..the dreaded 'itis'.. the fever doesn't take long to take over ! now you see another reason for the 'beverage'!

oh yeah.. and this is used a lot around here.... b.o.a.t.

'bring out another thousand'

ITUS is a term we boaters use to discuss our "need" for a bigger boat. You already have had at least one case of it yourself when you upgraded to your 240SD..........you were truly bitten by the 2 foot ITUS bug.

4 foot, 6 Foot, or 10 foot ITUS is even worse and also requires very deep pockets. ITUS is not curable............just be aware of that.

Ahh now I follow you :) Yes I have ITUS and I see from your signature you have it as well.

Good thing about it is the Wife which everyone here seems to call the Admiral has ITUS as well. Not sure why Admiral as my wife bought us Tervis Tumbler cups that say Captain on mine and 1st Mate on hers.

Just goes to prove that she is the admiral, giving you the Captain hat so you would think you are in charge. Sneaky. :smt043

As to the needed things on the 240. Looks like most of the items have been covered.

Rags for checking oil, lube, etc.
Multi tool/knife.
Extra rope.
Extra fenders.
Beach towels.

You don't want to know what I keep on our 240SD/Cruiser

Good additions, I actually picked up a knife and Multi tool from Home Depot today at a sidewalk sale they were having and I did pick up both red and white rags along with fuses and light bulbs at Pep boys today but they didn't have any 1amp fuses.

Extra fenders I'd not thought of cause MM gave us 4 beach towels is something we take on and off.

As for fenders (which i've not used yet) were the heck would you tie them on a 240SD I mean the dock is on the port side the 2 cleats on that side your gonna use your dock lines on do you tie your fenders there two? Just seems like alot to go on those two small cleats.

As for chuck1 with the mods you have I can only imagin what you have you yours, I think you just need a bigger boat :)

4 fenders is good. Never know when you may have to lend a pair to somebody that is tying off to you.

We'd probably find it amazing that it still floats! :smt043

I agree with all above, I did however have a problem with service until I notified my sales rep who got me in touch with the service manager, who then literally opened his wallet to make amends. My sales rep (Kris) was really great to work with and I will be upgrading with him soon, I hope.

Wow. Talk about jumping in with both feet!

I cured my 2' ITUS by upgrading from a 22' bowrider to a 28' cuddy during the initial buying process. :smt101

Where you boat also dictates your kit to a certain extent. Are you trailering, or in a slip? Lake or more open water?

I would not bother with oars, because you simply are NOT moving the boat with oars! If you are on open water, consider a SeaTow membership to get yourself towed back to dock in case you break down. :smt100 Have a cell phone with phone numbers and VHF radio. (Cell phone is increasingly handy on the water! But make sure you know who to call for help!)

On a small lake. . .chart is overkill. On more open water -> charts are essential -> and GPS a cool thing to have. On open water, binoculars are also important.

If you run at night. . GPS becomes essential. I use the breadcrumb feature on my GPS to help me get back at night through channels I traversed during the day. I also use the GPS to "mark" unlit navaids. Unlit navaids are a real hazard when running at night. My closest call was actually on a sailboat at night where the jib obscured a LIT marker. Didn't realize it was 50' from it until AFTER I tacked away from it by chance. The next day I was out on the water programming every Marker, Barrel, and "no wake" buoy within 5 miles of my slip (note that this excercise must be repeated annually: Many markers are moved seaonally)

A small tool box and first aid kit is always a good thing to have. Small hammer, one regular and one phillips screwdriver, one robogrib plyers, electrical tape and a buck knife will go a long way

New to the site. Just upgraded from a 02 Sea Ray 190 BR w/ Mercruiser 5.0 carbed. w/ Alpha 1 to a 06 Sea Ray 240 Sun Deck w/ Mercruiser 350 Mag w/ BR3. Similiar story to Morpheus. Went to look at 06 220 SD and ended up with 06 240 SD. Wife liked the extra room and usable head. Go figure!
Since we do alot of rafting with friends, I installed a seconded battery as I drained the starter one on my old 190 last year. Fortunatly one of the boats had cables.

We boat on inland lakes around Madison mainly. The only thing I miss on the 240 SD is the better gas mileage I got on the 190 BR.

Any experiences with 240 SD's wellcome! :smt017

Nice to meet you and welcome. I'm new myself this is our first boat. I have the basic 260hp engine but it works. What's funny is ours came with 2 batteries so it's interesting to see how different dealers deliver boats. Ours was purchased from Marine Max and the experiece was wonderful.

As an example of a trip we did from my calculations was about 60 miles and half take of fuel was about a 4 hour trip with a stop out in the middle of the trip just floating for lunch watchign the big ships go in and out of the channel. It was probably more then 60 miles as we didn't go in a straight line but that's my best guestimate.

Our sales guy says we can go across the whole state on 1 tank of gas.
