The boat we are interested in is a 2008 demo model, never owned, for sale by a Sea Ray dealer. I'm trying to figure out what I consider to be a fair purchase price for the boat. Looking up the retail value for the 2008 boat turns up prices that assume it's 'used' - almost 50% off the original list price. The dealer's current asking price is about 28% off the original retail list.

For pricing and valuation purposes, should this boat be considered a used 2-year old boat, or should it be considered 'new' (as the dealer does)?

My family purchased a 2008 from a Dealer in June of 2009. The boat had 25 hours on it and I guess you could call it a demo. The dealership did not label it as a demo and sold it as new to us. Our dealership was MarineMax and they agreed to fix numerous things, dings here and there. New carpet, etc, etc. I am extremely happy with our dealership and purchase price and will probably return to them in the future. Our purchase price was nearly 40% off MSRP, so in my opinion you might be able to get the 2008 model a little more than 28% off.

New because it will transfer to you with an MSO and new boat warranty. If for some reason the dealer has titled the boat in his name or that of an owner, then it is a used boat for any purpose, no matter what he says.

It doesn't seem to me that you are done negotiating yet. A 28% discount sells the boat at a profit without considering any rebates or incentives from Sea Ray. Most dealers are selling 2 year old inventory at a loss and the buyer's net cost is further reduced by any current incentives.

It's considered a "non-current" new boat for price evaluation. Hard to say what it is worth not knowing what it actually is.
