I will likely need to replace the tach on my 185 this winter; it is seriously messed up. My friend suggested just getting a full replacement set of gauges; this sounds like a good idea, but does it matter? Does sea ray use a specific brand of gauges so that I can just replace the tach and have it look like the others? If you think that a full replacement is useful, what brand do you like?

Most of the gauges that Sea Ray uses are custom made for them. But, replacing all of them is quite unnecessary. The only reason to do that would be if they are no longer available and you want everything to match. Seeing as you have a 2006, there is a good chance that you can still get it through your dealer, as well.

But, what is "seriously messed up"? Is it reading wrong? If you did a search for your problem, did you find the "exercise the little switch on the back" tip?

I did read about the switch - I will try that again, but I've done it once (maybe not enough) and the problem returned quickly (or may not have gone away). The gauge fluctuates wildly, climbing from 3K to 6K or bouncing around between 3000-4500 when the boat is up on plane; the sound of the engine and the speed are not changing at all (and I know what 5000 rpm sounds like- the engine is not actually racing). Good to know that I can get a direct replacement if needed.
