I have a 1988 wk 230 and want to do something with the area above the dash out to the windshield .Right now it's just painted dark blue. I was thinking that maybe I could pad it and cover it with some vinyl any ideas form the peanut gallery would be helpful.

I personally would just repaint it
if water gets in the padding it will just rot or worse
and if you look just under the edge of the windshield (side) to the hull there are drain slots just for this scenario.

I do believe its gelcoat , so i would spray gelcoat on it , but you can use paint , maybe imron , there are other's . I use a vinyl treatment on mine to keep it bright , but its not beat up , i would hate to damage a windshield by removing it .

Before you jump into this project can you post some pics so we can see what it looks like. It may not be gelcoat.

I was talking to a nice and helpful guy at Interlux recently because my dash is chalky looking. He suggested using a one or two-part polyurethane paint. You can spray it on or roll and tip it. He also suggested three coats of primer. I'll be doing mine next week. I've chosen Hatteras White for the dash and I will use flattening agent to cut the glare. I am probably going to have to take the windsheild off too unless I think it can be done well without. That's the part I am not looking forward to.

Post some shots of how the windshield is attached also,i need to do something with mine. The po put something on it like poly-glow and its peeling off and looks bad.

Been here, done this . I had a leak in my aft cabin starboard side. Long story short I narrowed in down to the windshiled seal. I removed the windshield, found where a bolt had broken off in the fiberglass from a previous windshield repair. While I had it off I tapped off all around the dash and with an old fasioned can of high gloss black Kraylon spray paint i put a few coats on. Looks great, cheap and durable. I've asked friends and family if it looks cheap to them and I get the same reply "YOU painted that, I would never had known) 41.jpg45.jpg42.jpg43.jpg

I'll do my best and get some pics. I am a little daunted about the windshield because I don't know how it fits together. CC, it looks like you did a great job. How's it holding up? Can I just take off the front panels, or are they locked together in such a way that I won't be able to do that? I notice from the pics that you left one side up. Did you call Taylor Made and buy their rubber seal or did you go with something else? Also, were you able to tell if the deck is cored under the windsheild screws?

It really is a do it yourself job. Best done with two or more people. I have to go to work, tonight I will try to post some notes on how to get it done.

Thanks,i am leaving in a few to go run the buffer again. If work dosent pick up soon i will be ready for the water way ahead of schedule,of course the water is still frozen solid up here and the river is chock full of trees branches and stumps from a heavy rain and thaw a month ago.I will try and get a pic of that mess today.

Hi All,
I am going to paint mine back to the burgundy color that it was. Mine is really faded and chalky, I'm going to clean it really well with ammoina and detergent, and use interlux one part polyurethane primer and then the color and apply 3 coats per the manufacturers suggestion. I have about 1 1/2" area between the windsheild and the burgundy part that I think I can tape off It's hard to get to but if I can get tape up in there the painting will be easy. Good Luck to everyone on their spring projects!

That's probably the paint I am going to use. Good luck. Show us your work with lots of pics!

I used Interlux topside paint. It didn't last long - 3 seasons. Eventually it all flaked off in little pieces. I don't if it was the paint, the sun beating on it or saltwater in the air. It had not been painted before. Burgundy. Going on fiberglass same color, directions said no primer needed.

Removing the windshield really wasn't that bad. There is a piece of trim on the lower out side part of the frame. Pull that out and you will find the screws all the way around. Pull them and you can slide the middle TWO pieces up. You will prob have to cut the silicone or peel off a rubber seal. Clean very well, apply a thick layer of silicone and reinsert the frames. Do NOT tighten all the screws. Allow time for the silicone to cure (took mine almost two weeks) then just the screws. If it leaks go a little tighter. Mine came out great and very inexpensive. You will want two or three people to help when you remove the glass.

I'm going to have to cut some wires, too. I've got two wipers and the anchor light mounted on the windshield. CC, you said pull the middle two pieces up. Does that mean both must come up at the same time, like their permanently connected? Where did your windshield leak, back through and onto the dash? Since the screws don't penetrate through the bottom layer of laminate, I don't see how water could get down below.

The wires on mine were routed through a grove in the top of the windshield along the starboard side. (I forgot about those) the windshield is constructed of four interlocking panels. I left two screws loose in each side panel while lifting both front panels out together. Then the sides come off after unscrewing. When I put it back together I did the sides first then tried inserting the front two as one... It wasn't pretty. That part I suggest to do different. Do each front panel separate.

RE leak. I found a screw broke off under the frame of the windshield, not quite flush, as well as the gel coat around it cracked. My guess is from a previous windshield removal. Ill try to attatch a picture. It was only leaking during heavy rain. When it leaked it leaked heavy, pooled up in the corner of the aft cabin soaking the mattress and all.46.jpg
