I am considering upgrading from a 2007 34 to a 2008 40 Sundancer. W The 40 I am looking at has Cummins 380 diesels. If u have this boat with those engines, do they perform well (enough power) or should I look for a 40 with the 425s?

I'd agree with Robert's assesment. I test drovea 40DA with the QSB 380's and thought it was slightly underpowered at cruise. It was great for maneuvering. I would imagine the QSB 425's cruise a bit easier but I don't know for sure. Also, the higher output engine does it at a higher RPM and turbo boost, so there is a fuel and likely reliability durabilty potential issue there as well. Good luck, the 40 is a great boat.

Wow! I have a 2006 340 SDA and I too have been looking for the exact boat you are searching for. I'm in the great lakes region so my choices have been gas engines on that boat but I too would prefer the diesels. A good friend of mine has the boat with the 380 diesels and he feels it runs well. He doesn't have the top end he used to with his old 340 and he is running those diesels hard to cruise at 26-30mph but it is still an adequate power plant. His boat looks and runs well so I personally wouldn't hesitate to buy it if I had the opportunity. It is a great size boat that looks really good and entertains well. Good luck

Jay, I am the friend EAUTY refers to with the 40 Dancer and Cummins 380’s. Regarding being underpowered the boat performs to my expectations. At 80% engine load with full tanks of fuel I cruise at 26 -27 mph burning 26 gph. I can run quicker if I want to push it and when I cruise with a friend with 425’s in a 42 Dancer I run in the 28 – 30 mph range. Good luck with your search, 40 Dancers with diesels are not that common, I looked for a few years before I found what I wanted.
