I have always done my own winterizing and I have made the jump to Cummins QSB 380's with closed cooling systems and heat exchangers. My question is beyond pumping antifreeze through the heat exchangers via the raw water intakes is their any other steps that should be preformed to winterize the engines?

Here's some of the basics, your particular motors may have some differences, and hopefully someone with the same setup will chime in:

Sample the Motor Oil, Trans Oil and Antifreeze with a reputable sampling outfit
Change the Motor Oil and filter
Change the Trans Oil and clean or change the filter
Change AF according to manuals schedule
Change engine zincs
Change Fuel primary and secondary filters
Clean out Strainers
Flush with fresh water
Suck up AF
Some remove their impeller for the winter....I change mine every other season.

I am also new to the QSB this year and have been researching winterizing these engines. The QSB Ops/Maint manual actually calls for draining the cooling system (including removing impeller and zincs and leaving hoses off the pump) but then putting some of amount of antifreeze in the heat exchanger (not clear how much) leaving the system somewhat open. So, I am considering whether to do it by the book or the old-fashioned way. In addition to the winterization procedure, there are yearly procedures for flushing the heat exchanger and marine gear cooler which seem to make sense to perform concurrent with winterization. There is also an annual procedure to clean the aftercooler which looks almost too daunting (lots of disassembly) to tackle by the book; I would like to figure out how/whether to do a simple flush and put off the full cleaning to Cummins or a diesel shop.
