Cummins Paint

Russ, a couple of years ago I got a can of Cummins white to paint a new water pump. I wasn't real happy with that paint when I tested; it was quite "runny". It could have been a bad can. I went to NAPA and they were able to cross-reference to one of their paints which worked much better and cost less.

I just painted a bunch of parts with cummins paint and it was fine ,no runs and covered in two coats(so i put 4 on).The cans have a date on them so if you buy it make sure its not more than 2 yrs old.

If your engines are white and the turbos are tan, then I think (maybe they are actually painted tan) but turbos turn tan due to heat build up and overloading (depending on the shade of tan). This is one way during a sea trial to see if PO has run the boat hard, color of the turbos and the bottom air intake port of the aftercooler and associated tubing. White engine means turbos should be same color white unless switched out and/or painted. Photos might help determine which is the case.

The previous owner of my boat painted the turbos with white Header paint. Made for the high heat and still looked good after 5 years.

White turbos are famous for turning tan. Mine have 100 hours and are slightly discolored. It is natural, my boat can hit the govoners at 95 % load and I run them at 400 rpms below rated cruising speed.

Interesting, I learned something new - hadnt even thought about it. They look deliberate and if i recall being uniform and everything that was/is tan not being subject to extreme heat but I will need to make closer inspection. For some reason i just thought due to that extreme heat the paint and color were different purposely.

thank you all for the info, much appreciated.

I know this sounds ridiculous but I cannot for the life of me find a place to buy this paint! Anyone have a link?

Russ, the compressor housings and charge air pipes between them and the aftercoolers on my boat read between 280 and 300 degrees on the IR gun at cruise.
That's what gives us those tu-tone paint jobs.

The Tan turbo pipe is normal, i would leave it alone. When you do your aftercooler service they get removed for access, you can repaint them but they will discolor again. Call Wesco Marine 631-728-9202. They are the LI cummins dealers and can send you parts. In CT you have a large cummins dealer, i forgot their name but they did do a survey on my 420 DA that i bought up in Conn. I use wesco as they are a mom and pop certified cummins, get much better service.
