Dear Alex & Flotilla,
I just found out I will going in for another back surgery shortly.... So, the New Freedom crew will not be able to attend the trip this year. I currently have a 2 night slip reservation at the shelter island boat yard that will be up for grabs. I had put in a special request for a side tie along the main dock, the reservation is for 45 ft. 14.5 beam 4ft. Draft. Please let me know if anyone in the flotilla would be interested. It's a great slip! Just let me know this way I can make arrangements with dock master to pass it on to the right person.

What procedure are you having done? I am always curious since I have enough metal in my back to make an anchor!

Marianne,

Sorry to hear that you need surgery. You will be missed. We hope that you have a quick & full recovery. Be well!

Marianne, I'm sorry to hear about the surgery. I hope you have fast and easy recovery, and will be able to join us next time.

Right after Labor Day last year I had a herniated disc rupture (L-5-S-1) causing a severe foot drop. In September I went in for an emergency microdiscectomy surgery to remove the disc off my nerve. A few weeks after the surgery the disc completely collapse leaving my vertebrae bone on bone & in severe pain. In October I went back in for an Anterior inter body Fusion (ALIF) to replace the disc space in my back. Fast forward, 6-7 months post 2nd surgery. After continuous chronic pain, test show that my disc/LT cages have moved out of place causing chronic instability in my lower back. This was due to the surgeon not supporting my back with screws & plates.
This week I will be going in back into surgery with a different spinal surgeon who specializes in corrective surgery. He will revise my original spinal fusion with more bone tissue, screws & rods. This posterior inter body lumbar fusion (PLIF) will correct the instability and pain issues in my lower back.

Humph, I do know after much research that if you have old antiquated equipment in your back from prior surgeries there are spinal surgeons who specialize in revision surgery. New techniques make most of these surgeries minimally evasive. Of corse you would have to evaluate your pain because surgery should be your last resort.

My surgery should have a one day procedure and If done correctly, set for life. After a series of errors on the first two surgeries I am now having a 3rd within a 12 month period. In NYC you think your going to the best of the best, my neurosurgeon team was considered 2nd in the world! So be careful before considering any spinal surgery....enjoy the flotilla. Hopefully next summer I will be back on the water!

Just a quick update:

End of the Flotilla Feast
As was expected, it's not an easy task to find a place on Block in mid season for a party of 80-100. So, based on my preliminary research we have one place that can accommodate our group, which is Ballard's. They have special menus for group events, which can be found here: http://www.ballardsinn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Ballards_Event_Menu.pdf

The prices range from $35 to $60 per person. I was told that they have kids (under 10 y/o) menu for less. If this is something the group is interested in, then we'll need to get the ball rolling. Otherwise, I'll need extra hand to find an alternative.

The Feast of the East
It's time to start adding items to our menu for the feast at IBM. Let's get this going, folks.

Yikes, sounds like a nightmare! In 2009 I had a fusions with hardware on L3/4 and a Prodisc-L inserted at level L4/5. I am not 100% pain free but I have minimal issues and consider my surgery a huge success. I am one of the lucky ones, I even play golf occasionally but have recently decided it's not worth the risk. This was not minimally invasive since with the adr (artificial disc replacement), they have to come in from the front. Leaves a nice 8" scar on the belly and will ruin a person's six pack! Sorry for the hijack...

Marianne, Hope this surgery goes better than the previous ones. Sounds like it will.

Alex, Ballard's sounds like the way to go to me. How do we pick which menu? There are an awful lot of choices for a spreadsheet.
Maybe you should just pick one and then see who wants in?

You can mark me and my crew down for attending. We wouldn't miss it.

Marianne, good luck with the surgery. We'll see You next time.

Ballard's is fine with us.

Dale

Also, for those that wish to go fishing, our charter captain (Jim) needs to know if there are two trips, or just one. At the moment, we have a full morning trip, and only one person for the afternoon trip. If we can get a few more people to go fishing, that would be great. Or, just limit it to the morning trip, but then Jim may have to charge a bit more. So, bottom line, we need a couple more volunteers for the fishing adventure of a lifetime....

Jim would also like a deposit, which I will pay for, but again, we need to know if it is one or two trips. If you are interested, now is the time to speak up.

Dale

Alex, I'm Good with Ballard's
Dale, if no one wants to go in the afternoon, it's no big deal for me not to go at all. Whatever works best

Alex, Ballards looks good. With the menu and number of people, it seems like we are planning a small wedding!

I spoke to the Ballard's owner yesterday and asked to give us a simplified version of the menu where we would be charged a flat fee per person and have option of meats and fish dishes for the main course. Similar approach might work for kids (10 and under) as well. He's putting few things together and will email me new options. I'll keep you guys posted.

In the meantime, let's get some table offerings going for the feast on Aug 9th at IBM. For new people of those that just want to have some ideas on the table offerings, go to the first page and go to the links for previous Flotilla and Rendezvous. On the first page of every event you'll see what was brought to the table in the past.

Quick reminder, we're just about two weeks away from the trip If anyone still haven't confirmed their marina reservations, don't delay much longer or you might put yourself in unexpected situation. If you have any outstanding items to have your boat ready for the trip, now is the time to address them.

Alex, Just a reminder...if no one in Flotilla is interested in our boat yard slip reservation I will be canceling the reservation this week. I currently have a 2 night slip reservation at the shelter island boat yard that will be up for grabs. I had put in a special request for a side tie along the main dock. The reservation is for 45 ft. 14.5 beam 4ft. Draft. It's a great slip! if anyone in Flotilla is interested, please let me know so I can make arrangements with dock master to pass it on to the right person in our group.
Regards, Marianne

Sorry if this has been asked or is posted somewhere, but I have been off the grid. Is there an updated itinerary for Block Island. If it is posted, please direct me to it and do not be repetitive because of me. Alex the check was sent and you should have mid next week.

John,
Take a look at the first page where I have all the dates and ports. If the answer to your question is not there, let me know and I'll provide more details.

Folks,
Just a reminder, I need more responses for Ballard's.

With already less than two weeks away from the the event we don't have a single entry on the menu for the "Feast of the Northeast", which is scheduled for Aug 9th at IBM.

A quick question regarding activities.

We just had a dinghy poker run in our marina, it was a lot of fun. I had it on the plan last year for the flotilla, but we got busy with other activities. I wanted to find out if you guys are interested in doing it. If yes, where do you prefer to do it, in Shelter Island or in Block?

In case if not all are aware how it works, this is NOT A RACE, you can even doing in a kayak. The idea is to have a crew with some water guns or waterer you want to use to splash others. We need to have 5 stations (it could be couple people sitting on a beach or on a dock, or floating on any boat/dinghy). You get a card at the first station, then go from station to station until you collect all 5 cards. During the run between the stations we just have fun/water fights on the dinghies. The winner is whoever has the best hand.

So, we'll need few crews with dinghy/kayak or whatever floating device you wish to use, some water weapons, envelops, cards, couple of people at each station to hand out cards and finally the some spectators (just following along on a dinghy or jet ski or whatever) who could also assist with getting some photos.

Let me know if you guys want me to add this on the daily compass.

That's sounds like a great time. We would be in for it at block island. We would want to be in the poker run. If you need me to bring supplies for it let me know.
