What procedure are you having done? I am always curious since I have enough metal in my back to make an anchor!Dear Alex & Flotilla,
I just found out I will going in for another back surgery shortly.... So, the New Freedom crew will not be able to attend the trip this year. I currently have a 2 night slip reservation at the shelter island boat yard that will be up for grabs. I had put in a special request for a side tie along the main dock, the reservation is for 45 ft. 14.5 beam 4ft. Draft. Please let me know if anyone in the flotilla would be interested. It's a great slip! Just let me know this way I can make arrangements with dock master to pass it on to the right person.

Yikes, sounds like a nightmare! In 2009 I had a fusions with hardware on L3/4 and a Prodisc-L inserted at level L4/5. I am not 100% pain free but I have minimal issues and consider my surgery a huge success. I am one of the lucky ones, I even play golf occasionally but have recently decided it's not worth the risk. This was not minimally invasive since with the adr (artificial disc replacement), they have to come in from the front. Leaves a nice 8" scar on the belly and will ruin a person's six pack! Sorry for the hijack...Right after Labor Day last year I had a herniated disc rupture (L-5-S-1) causing a severe foot drop. In September I went in for an emergency microdiscectomy surgery to remove the disc off my nerve. A few weeks after the surgery the disc completely collapse leaving my vertebrae bone on bone & in severe pain. In October I went back in for an Anterior inter body Fusion (ALIF) to replace the disc space in my back. Fast forward, 6-7 months post 2nd surgery. After continuous chronic pain, test show that my disc/LT cages have moved out of place causing chronic instability in my lower back. This was due to the surgeon not supporting my back with screws & plates.
This week I will be going in back into surgery with a different spinal surgeon who specializes in corrective surgery. He will revise my original spinal fusion with more bone tissue, screws & rods. This posterior inter body lumbar fusion (PLIF) will correct the instability and pain issues in my lower back.
Humph, I do know after much research that if you have old antiquated equipment in your back from prior surgeries there are spinal surgeons who specialize in revision surgery. New techniques make most of these surgeries minimally evasive. Of corse you would have to evaluate your pain because surgery should be your last resort.
My surgery should have a one day procedure and If done correctly, set for life. After a series of errors on the first two surgeries I am now having a 3rd within a 12 month period. In NYC you think your going to the best of the best, my neurosurgeon team was considered 2nd in the world! So be careful before considering any spinal surgery....enjoy the flotilla. Hopefully next summer I will be back on the water!
A quick question regarding activities.
We just had a dinghy poker run in our marina, it was a lot of fun. I had it on the plan last year for the flotilla, but we got busy with other activities. I wanted to find out if you guys are interested in doing it. If yes, where do you prefer to do it, in Shelter Island or in Block?
In case if not all are aware how it works, this is NOT A RACE, you can even doing in a kayak. The idea is to have a crew with some water guns or waterer you want to use to splash others. We need to have 5 stations (it could be couple people sitting on a beach or on a dock, or floating on any boat/dinghy). You get a card at the first station, then go from station to station until you collect all 5 cards. During the run between the stations we just have fun/water fights on the dinghies. The winner is whoever has the best hand.
So, we'll need few crews with dinghy/kayak or whatever floating device you wish to use, some water weapons, envelops, cards, couple of people at each station to hand out cards and finally the some spectators (just following along on a dinghy or jet ski or whatever) who could also assist with getting some photos.
Let me know if you guys want me to add this on the daily compass.
