CSR Northeast Flotilla 2013

UPDATE: Not going to have a car on the island after all. Ferry reservations for those days have been booked for months. Bummer.

Hello All! Since we can't join you on the water we're going to crash the party at Block Island. We've booked a room at Champlins Sun-Tue. We'll take the car on the ferry so we'll have at least one vehicle on the island. I'm joining the bar hopping trip so I won't be driving. Feel free to volunteer to be the designated driver.

That's great, Ben.

As you can see we're very casual. I hope you're bringing your big car. We'll have plenty of "drivers"....

Ouch, double bummer on that one.

If we rent a VW on the island, could one of the games be to see how many people can we fit into the car?

I think it might have been alex. Your scaring everybody. Na I'm jk

Thwy just chabged the marine forecast. Se 5-10 then west in yhe afternoon seas 3-5. Inside guys let me know what your plans are please so if that does not change I can plan accordingly. Ill leave my dock at 5am so I can mwet up with u if I have to. Joe I'm sorry but if the forecast don't drop I'm not happy with getting beaten with 5 footers for 4 hours..

This potential member of the inside team, is planning on overnighting @ Todd;s marina thursday night.
Think the plan was to leave from BluePoint @ about 7 - 8 am in order to catch MI mid tide ish

Keep in mind there's four of us. Aren't you doing the rest of the trip?

Token
4 people is fine its only me and my gf. I can offer 2 options if you'd like and your more then welcome to either. Meet me at si in the am or meet me at mauntauk when were fueling up. I'm pretty sure either one you can take a ferry back to. But yes I am doing the rest of the trip with the crew so I will not be able to drive you back. Or you can go the other way and ride back to our next stop with me. Your choice more than happy to have you

GSB gang,

I'm looking at the forecast and I think that those that were looking to run outside you have a window of opportunity Fri early in am.

Based on quick observation, Thursday after midnight the wind is doing 180deg swing. What this means for you, is that the wind will start pushing the water away from shore. In that respect NW wind is the best you can ask for since the Island will keep you protected to some degree. Granted that only 6-8hrs is not enough time for the NW wind to flatten the ocean, but another good news is that the wind will maintain W component as it shifts from WNW to WSW.

I wasn't paying too much attention which inlet you're planning to use but if it's FI, then you're looking at ~35NM to SHK inlet, which is roughly 2hrs run.

Anyway, we can seat here all week long behind computer screens, but looking at the current forecast I would jump out of the inlet to see what's going on for real and make the final decision then. Again, based on what I see now, it should be very doable if you go early (say be out of the inlet by 7ish).

Just my .02c.

Hi Alex

If you zoom in closer to shore the waves height drops to 1 foot

We are hoping to head out moriches inlet by 8:30. Just waiting to get info from tow boat moriches captain to see if it is safe since Sandy. He is supposed to call me tomorrow.

We need to hit high tide on the inside before reaching moriches inlet or there is no water to get through.

Just got good news my boat is now running fine - fuel pump was flaking from the inside and clogging up my rails. all cleaned up and ready to go.

yippie.

Neil

Alex,
The 3-5 forecast is for 20nm out. When I go on NOAA and put the cursor about 1-2 miles out it shows 1 & 1-2 foot seas. Am I looking at this correctly? Also The problem I am having now is that the Sea Tow captain said the Moriches inlet is FUBAR & would give me no advice for negotiating it. He also said they won't escort. He was kind enough to tell me they will be ready to pickup the pieces afterwards though! Nice friggin guy. May be a good reason to look into tow boat us next year! Neil is going to talk to them in the am. Let's see if they are anymore help.
Btw: My boat was fixed yesterday & Neil's was tonight so we re good to go!

Edit: Haha, Neil beat me to it!

Hey Neil,

I zoomed further out to see the outlook at the "worst case", stronger wind and larger waves height. The closer to shore will be much better. I like to be prepared for worst and let the good come.

Glad your boat is back in business.

I wanted to remind those that considering inside all the way. Please don't overlook Shinnecock Bay trouble spots. We don't hear too much about them like we do for Moriches, but were there and caught me by big surprise.

Here's what I posted in our 2010 Rendezvous thread:

"We’re off to the Shelter Island for our CSR rendezvous 2010 – Raft-up. Knowing that Moriches troubled spots are behind to the West of us I cruise along and enter Shinnecock Bay. Just like during the previous leg the ICW is very well marked, so I just keep a sharp lookout for the next buoy. So, having herd no postings on any board about shoals here I didn’t worry about the tide and maintain my cruising speed. As I approach buoy #2 all of a sudden I see the depths dropping sharply to 5’-4’, then my newly installed depth finder (B60-20 transducer with DSM30) fail on me giving me readings of “---“. I immediately switched my SmarCraft TACH to show the depths. It was showing 3.6’ under the boat (oh, thank God this one was still reading). I said to myself what a interesting “surprise” that’s waiting for me. I slow down to about 17MPH @3150-3200RPM. I dropped the trim tabs down all the way to keep the boat on plane but with the minimum speed. Proceeding to the next buoy and my SC depth continues to drop 3.3’-2.6’. I’m dead in the middle of the channel and see the next buoy the depth is blinking and showing 1.6’-1.3’ under the boat. This time I was faced with very tough decision. I know that according to my SC depth finder at the point anything lower of 1.3’ I touch the bottom with my props while at idle (off plane). At this time I’m on plane, which means I’m gaining about 1’ or so. The only thoughts I had going through my head are: if I get off plane I loose a foot and will start stirring the bottom, depending how hard, but the vacation could be over. If I remain on plane and the depth drops any lower the vacation is over. Considering that no one ever talked about this being a dangerous spot I couldn’t believe that this place will have less than 3’ of water, so I decided to stay on plane and take my chance. If my memory serves me right, just as I passed buoy #6 the depth went back to 5’-6’ and my new depth finder was working fine. I looked at the chartplotter to see if the similar depths are expected ahead and I see that I’ll be approaching another shallow zone very soon. Sure enough (if I recall correctly) between buoy #8 and #10 there was another drop, but not as much as 1.3’, but close to 3-4’. After that spot the unexpected nerve rocking surprise was over. It’s a good thing that there were no boats coming head on otherwise it would turn in to a real test who’s got the “bigger kohonas” as I wasn’t going to move from the center of the channel."

I would ask around boaters, go to boaters ed, call CG, SeaTow, etc. and make sure you know what's the status of the SHK Bay after Sandy and if those spots I'm referring to are ok.

...Btw: My boat was fixed yesterday & Neil's was tonight so we re good to go!

Alright! Good news for a change...and I can tell you no longer sound pissed off. LOL.

Haha, not pissed, just a little stressed. I'll be real happy when I reach our first port because all of the crap will be behind us!

Just keep doing what you're doing and you'll reach it just fine leaving all the crap behind.

Stress - this reminds me something I originally thought posting as part of the Flotilla Guide, but then decided to let along. However, I think it's important to mention few words.

You Are The Captain:

It's important to remember that we don't always have 100% control of the situation and it's not always about if something happens, it's about how you handle it. So folks, please don't forget that you're the captains and it's up to you to either make your crew nervous or keep them calm and comfortable. They will always look at how you react and naturally react accordingly. Stay calm no matter what's going on, whether you're tired or stressed, or things don't go 100%, just remain calm and address one thing at the time. Just be cool and everything will be cool as well....

Alex, I don't know what format you have your guide in, but it would be nice to see available in Google Docs. Something fluid that could be enhanced. It's a nice guide that really has application outside of this event.

If you need assistance with this, let me know.

Nice job
