Anyone have instructions on how to replace a water impeller on a crusader 454. 1987 vintage, original engines. This is on an 87 340 sundancer.

Also a part #?

Thanks!

You first need to remove the pump from the motor and determine the brand. When the pump has been ID'd get the proper kit. Do a search on YouTube and you will find a video on the proper procedure for impeller replacement.

On You Tube search for "Sherwood Raw Water Pump". Access for the removal and install will be your biggest challenge.

Thanks guys. Does anyone have any good information on routine maintenance for these motors? I plan on doing the stuff like oil, fuel filters and air filters myself, but having a hard time finding good information and part numbers.

Everything can be had at the local auto parts store. I would start by looking at what you have now and getting part numbers off of the filters to cross reference. Which oil to use could lead to several pages of debate, so ask what others use where you are at.

Raw water impellers should be an annual change (IMO) so get the part number on those along with O rings and gasket. Don't forget the generator as well.

Belts should be on condition, again it's a local parts store item. Check condition of all hoses and clamps, keep spare clamps on board.

Also, don't forget the transmissions. Check the oil level and fluid conditions.

Purchase a good fluid evacuator like this: https://mobiledistributorsupply.com...IhKi5nIjI1gIVWCe9Ch16fATDEAkYAyABEgIvdvD_BwE#

Also, while you are down there, clean the strainers, check the battery water levels.

mercurymarine.com. Enter your engine ser. #, all your parts with numbers will be shown.

Thank you sir!

How often do you change tranny fluid?

Also, my boat doesn't have strainers on the engine through-hulls. It's a freshwater boat. Do I need strainers?

Mercury supports Crusader also? Good to know.

Mercury does not support Crusader. While the main engine of both brands have common parts all of the attached parts related to the cooling system, belts and hoses are all different. Do not buy just any brand of belts as cheap belts will shred when trying to run marine sea water pumps. Napa gold belts hold up well. And as far as oil goes you need to use an oil that has a zinc additive in any engine that has flat tappets such as your does. I use Valvoline VR1 racing oil that has the zinc in it. I also use K&N oil filters for their extra capacity and heavy duty canister.

Yes. Fresh water still has grasses, weeds, plastic bags, etc. I would get those installed. They were installed by the factory on my '89.
